As far as I'm concerned, the idealistic points of view are just as crucial as the pragmatic ones, no matter what realm of life considered. It is wiser to find a balance between pragmatism and idealism.

One compelling fact that supports me is that while pragmatic behaviors will insure the survival in the short term, the idealism plays a vital role in guiding and encouraging us for lofty goals. In this roaring developed modern society with fierce competitions, all of us must face some urgent problems. At this time, the pragmatism will help a lot in guaranteeing our success in the short term. However, in a longer period of times, it is the idealism rather than the pragmatism that lays a more influential impact. For instance, when it comes to academic, the pragmatic behaviors will increase our opportunities to pass the coming examination, for we will spend more time on the subject to be examined rather than study the issues we are interested in. But in long-term, it is the ideal, which arouse the passions and the striving for the academic, leads the scientist to the final achievement. Andrew Wales, the mathematician of Princeton, stimulated by the idealism, take nearly 10 years and great efforts to prove the Fermat's Last Law, which is unproven for over 300 years. Similarly, if a company or a political party wants to ensure a long-term success, they shouldn’t only follow short-term benefits without considering the ideal and belief they hold. Bill Gates started his Microsoft driven by a simple ideal that every family should own a computer and Abraham Lincoln win highly reputation for his simple ideal that all men are created equal. Hence, no matter what realm in life, the idealism will be beneficial for long-term success.

Another compelling fact concerned is that while the idealism can be a good guidance and inspiration, the pragmatism will keep us away from irrational illusion it may cause. Leo Tolstoy once said, "Ideal is the beacon; without ideal, there is no secure direction, and without direction there is no life". Encouraged by the dream of flying, the White Brothers produce the first plane. Stimulated by the ideal of lightening the world, Thomas Edison made his every effort to succeed in inventing the blub. Looking back upon our history, it is the idealism that stimulates the human beings for advancement. However, we can’t deny the possibility that irrational ideal sometimes turn out to be illusion. Pragmatism, or the realism, play a important part in prevent this situation. We should all admit that men live on the feet of reality. Some ideals seem to be ideals forever. We should be in good pace with the human reality and deal with some goals in more pragmatic way. For example, we should pay more attention to the health rather than the dream of living forever. Such illusion as perpetual mobile ought to be got rid of either.

As mentioned above, it is unwise for us to conclude that the pragmatism is better or the idealism is. In most occasions, they are as important as well and they can’t be replaced by each other. In short term, we tend to be pragmatic while idealistic points of view are taken in long term. When we are living, we are guided by the ideal and compromise to reality to some extent.
