"It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data."
In common social life, no one can escape the experience of making some judgment. In most frequent cases, we ask for some detailed information for reference before we make a wise decision. In light of these experiences, it is not strange that many people take it for granted that it is a grave mistake to theorize before on(one) has data just as the speaker asserts. As for me, however, I can only agree with the assertion in so far as that(while) we need adequate data to give(make) a theory convincing while(,) we can't deny the rationality of theorizing with educated guessing.
Whatever academic fields considered, adequate data is the basis of (the foundation )of convincing theory. Without careful observations and logical analysis of these information, which contributes to the valuable data we need, the things we theorized will be nothing but simple guessing. Looking into the marvelous buildings of our natural science, we will see magnificent achievements based on the valuable data. Kelper, the great German physicist, theorizes his famous laws of planetary motion based on his intelligent analysis on the observations of his teacher-Tycho, the Danish astronomer. Even Kelper himself admitted that he couldn't make such a great discovery of universe without the accurate data his teacher left.
When it comes to the social science such as economy, the data plays a similar basic role. For example, the English economist, Phillips concludes the famous Phillips Curve through his research on the economy data of Britain recorded during passing hundred years.
So many cases of this kind along with our common experience(Our empirical evidence) on studying will surely confirm that the data plays an indispensable role in theorizing.
However, important as the data is, we cannot overlook a principle( fact) in science research that some accomplishments are based on the reasonable assumptions of scientists in(to) larger extent. With little objective data, sometimes scientists make educated hypotheses first and pursue further experiments to evaluate the rationality of the hypotheses.
In proper cases, the scientists tend to [use thought experiments which don't need material data to make some logical deduction].(make some logical deduction by using thought experiments which don’t need material data) The most famous application of this method is the foundation of the theory of Relativity by Einstein, a great name we couldn't avoid to see in any physical books.(感觉可以加点论述,怎么从光速不变推的,而不是从数据出发) Admittedly, hypotheses without any data do not exist.(without the support of data are unstable) But we should admit the fact that it is the bravery(audacious) exploration spirit to assume properly, rather than the analysis of the data, plays a more important role in these great discoveries in science.(没有论据支持more important,而且文章考虑的不是哪个更重要)
Considering the question in the realm of the arts and philosophy, we will find data plays a less important role in theorizing. There are no so-called exactly right answers to many problems in literature and philosophy. No existing data will be used to prove or disprove the thought. Original thinking is encouraged to broaden the thoughts of human beings. When the philosophers such as Kant and Nietzsche develop their thoughts, they seldom have adequate data we expected, but this doesn’t prevent them from becoming masters in philosophy. (Philosophers such as Kant and Nietzsche built their mansion of logic based on several fundamental assumptions without using any data. What they resorted to is common sense.)Whether they have adequate data for theorizing is no longer the key point, for people will evaluate the thoughts through accepting it or not.(感觉TS可以改成在这些情况下theorize 未必需要data作为前提,这样好像更扣题,因为实际上data不是不重要,而是没有data)
In conclusion, the speaker holds a extreme view on the issue. Although the data are indispensable in making a convincing theory in most academic fields, it is not wise to deny the rationality of theorizing through(based on) reasonable assumptions. (或者through proper reasoning)In some realm where the true-and-false is not so obvious like philosophy, data is not as important as expected. We shouldn’t theorize unwarrantedly, but we can think freely.
总的来说,楼主的issue相当强悍,例子都很恰当。本人水平有限,如果有错误的地方,还请楼主指正 |
