History, as mystery as it is, has attracted every generation to delve its values concealed under the diversities of events and historical heroes and heroines. Then, what do people obtain during these studies? As this assertion claims, its chief merit of the historical study is to diminish the cognizance that people in different times are different. Supposing that this point of view mainly comes from the perspective of human character, with partial agreement, however, I believe the values of the study also benefit the society by acknowledging the differences between people in different times, as well as other significant contributions.

Admittedly, through the study of history, people tend to assimilate the virtuous characters of mankind in common between different times, such as patriotic, sedulous, skeptical and persistence. First, history always can provide basic premise for people to get the motivation towards their goals. By being told of the historical patriotic heroes during the pupil time, the country warriors emerge generation by generation. By admiring the fighting spirit towards freedom and independency of Lincoln, Americans stick to their equal rights. Next, persistence and skepticism as measures towards success can also be found in history. From Copernicus to Kepler, the skeptical and hardworking spirits in different times both contribute to establish the base of astronomy. Finally, modest and further development characters can also be substantiated by uncountless history examples. Just with these common characters, people in different times get the common sense towards the only target to make their life better, and thus attain the self-identify within the human history following the motivation to future.

However, the history also represents the temporal difference between generations to lead people get closer to the truth. At one hand, history illustrates advancement. Due to limitations in different eras, people’s understandings toward some specific phenomenon can be totally different, and history guides people to progress. Eclipses was seen as an omen for unfortunate future due to the amplified timidity of ancient people, while at the contemporary time scientists are paying great interest on it on the ground of curiosity character. By representing the distinction, history help define advancement. On the other hand, by comparing the cases of success and failures in different times, the successors can summarize the better way to move further in future. The crankiness of Hitler launched the world II, while the pacificism of Mandela relieved racial conflicts. People living in later centuries learn the lessons through these vivid examples in history. Hence, both the two aspects indicating differences of people represented by history can also significantly provide wise directions for successors.

Bias on emphasis of the common or difference of human being themselves in different times through history studying is not reasonable. Without acknowledging the common characters in different times, people will lose the basis of motivation towards advancement and effective measures on their way. Without admitting differences of human characters in different eras, people will enmesh in the failures happened before and waste their efforts once and once again. Therefore, just as Francis Bacon, the British Philosopher ever said, “History makes men wise.” Let’s utilize the historical experience we studied at the maximum degree and strive a balance in the overall consideration, towards both common and difference history gives.

To sum up, both the two aspects which the study of history brings out benefit people for further development towards truth. Each one-side statement to lose the other perspective is partial and unreasonable. Same as all the dialectical topics, study of history, should be considered compressive, to better history.
