History has long been an important research subject to which thousands of historians have devoted their whole life. As what the speaker asserts, I generally agree that one of the main benefits of historical research is to break down the illusion that people remained unchanged in the river of history. However, we also cannot overlook other important findings we can benefit from the study.

In the first place, we have to admit that human beings share a lot in common over the long history, and we have inherit numerous things are from the past, just like our current habits, our cultures and the attitudes and ways towards life.
As time goes by, modern technology and the economic development have changed the patterns of life, but there are still many things left enact. Historical research is the just way which reveals us the mainstream and discipline of a society. The research on the ancient Arabian history tells us that the religious belief of the Arabian people didn’t change much. If go back to the past, an Arabian still have to visit mosques everyday and join fast at certain month of a year with the people of that era. The study on the ancient Chinese lifestyle reveals that Chinese people keep the habit of using chopsticks with the history of 3000 years and now they are still using them.

However, we mustn’t ignore that historical research is also a way to analysis the changed things and this help us better understanding how society develops. Historians study historical events, social transformations and changes trying to find out the reason why they have changed. Human nature remains the same, but it reveals itself in divergent ways in different periods of history; cultural identity remains the same, but some ideas have been forgotten and some new ones have been adopted. The study of contemporary history of Japan tells us the reason the long way of Japan to change from a monarchical country into a modern Constitutional monarchy system. And the study on the Soviet Union also enables us to further understand the reason of its political disintegration and reform of the economic system.

Apart from the benefits of the historical research above, history is also considered as a mirror for us to learn from the past and foresee the future. It can always provide suggestions and solutions when people of different time encounter similar difficulties. Chinese government efficiently control the spread of A/H1N1 based on the experience learn from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndromes outbreak in 2003. And now in this subprime mortgage crisis, many American economists are trying to find a way out from the experience of 1920’s financial crisis. Someone even found the words written by Karl Max which has predicted the crisis hundreds of years ago in his work Da Kapital. Furthermore, historical research also reminds us to avoid the tragedies ever happened before. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum as a live history book, again and again, continues to be a warning of all people about the cruelty of extreme Nazism and destructive power of war.

In sum, the study of history indeed benefits us to get rid of the illusion that people of different period time are totally different. However, at the same time it helps us to recognize the changes, greatly enlightened us towards present problems and envision the future. The benefit of the study of history should be made up of several things: we find out both the changing and the changeless in the history of mankind, adjust present and future actions.
