17"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

When a law is considered unjust, should every member of a society take the duty to disobey the unjust law? Most of the people may think it is compelling to agree with the speaker’s assertion to against the unjust laws. However, in my point of view, considering the nature, characters and imperfections of law, it is impropriate to disobey and resist the unjust law.

To begin with, the nature of law determines people’s obedience since it came into force. Law is a system of rules that govern the actions of people in a community and it restrict politics, economics and society in different ways. It must be followed by citizens; otherwise the violating of law will give rise to a cause of action in the court.

Moreover, law is usually enforced through a set of institutions; it is drafted and legislated by those institutions on behalf of the interests of majority of the citizens. It cannot be easily regarded as unjust from a personal point of view especially when some laws are unpleasant to some people, and it is even worse if one disobeys and resists law accordingly. The city’s ban smoking in bars and nightclubs may have incurred disapproval among the tobacco fans; however it has protected the majority of non-smokers like women and children. It is ridiculous if those opponents regard such law unjust and turn their discontent into action.

At the meantime, we also have to admit the imperfection of law. As all things are changing and developing as time goes by, law is no exception and might no longer accepted by the public or it cannot keep up with the pace of social. It requires review and amendment in accordance with social development and people’s needs. In the early 1800s, an English man could be hanged for stealing a piece of cotton cloth; however, by the end of 1900s, death penalty disappeared from England in concern of individual rights. Also, the gay marriage is not recognized by American government as it is prohibited from doing so by the Defense of Marriage Act, but six states have legalized gay marriage to cater for the gay couples requesting marriage rights. These examples powerfully prove that, even law is born to be imperfect; it is under continuous evolutions and improvements, and it is not worth for individuals to resist law when it appears unjust.

Last but not the least, disobedience and resistance are not the correct attitudes when individuals encounter unjust laws. Violating laws equals to a lapse into crime no matter the law is considered just or not. Individuals should express their dissatisfaction through legal channels or by means of writing to the government, protest or even demonstration. In May 2006, thousands marched in the US to protest the government attacks on immigrants, especially undocumented workers, which forced the government to craft a compromise bill in the end. And it well indicates

That apart from violating laws, there’s still some other ways to change the unjust laws.

In Sum, no matter a law is just or not, it is incorrect for people to disobey it. Individuals should show more respects and tolerance to law even it is imperfect. Moreover, people also can try to change the unjust situation through legal ways which help the enacting and improving laws.
