70"In any profession—business, politics, education, government—those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership."

In almost every fields of society, leader always plays an important role. Some people will think that every enterprise can surely achieve success through the way of changing leaders. The speaker even asserts that, leadership of any profession should last no longer than 5 years. This might be compelling to agree with, however, I doubt the whether are there any other means by which the enterprises can still succeed, and if the 5 years is the perfect length of a leader in power.

Admittedly, many enterprises get through the difficult situations and finally succeed by following a new leader whose new thinking brings life and vigor to the whole group. A new Executive Creative Director of an advertising agency will bring brand new creative designing style since the day he is on-board, which can possibly help the creative agency to win many new business and international design awards.


However, frequently change of leaders might also hinder the development of the group as their new working ways and values may contradict with the present which will confuse the group members and decrease the working efficiency. For Instanced, the changing of premiers fails to reverse the decline of Japan’s economy and social development while it largely disappoints people’s confidence towards the government. And there are also many others ways group still can achieve success through, which apparently cannot be overlooked. Those methods include optimizing the group organization, introducing new talented staffs and adjusting the existing management expertise. The L’Oreal Group as one of the leading companies specialize in cosmetic and beauty, has constantly insist on hiring brilliant open-minded staffs with creative thinking and different culture background. They believe that those young energetic stuffs can continuously bring new ideas and different perspectives towards the business to the group, when making important decisions, and they greatly helped the company to success in the past 100 years.
Thus, one group can not merely rely on the new leadership to make a hit, and a change of leader can never be the prerequisite of a group to achieve success.

Even if it is necessary to have new leaders, should the in power step down after five years is also questionable. Obviously, different professions have different situations. In business field, 5 years leadership may be a short period. In many family firms, the leader take power for more than 20 years till they are too old to make decision, and they will then pass their power to their heirs. And a lot of Japanese big firms adapt the tradition of career long employment, which they think will make the group members feel the company as home and work harder. In such Japanese companies, like Matsushita or Nissin, a leader will have more than 5 years in power. In the political field, one presidency of almost all the countries will last 4 years. And the leader of great achievements and well-support will possibly win for another presidency, while the leader who is incapable of managing the country will end his presidency ahead of schedule. Bill Clinton as a good example was reappointed after his 4 years presidency, and during his period, the American society has greatly developed. Shinzo Abe, as former Japanese Prime Minister, resigned abruptly 1 year after being elected. These examples all indicates that, whether the leader step down after 5 years should be discussed on concrete situations.

To sum up, it is not the best way for a group to achieve success only relying on new leadership. Other aspects also need to be taken into consideration. And the length of a leadership is different in different professions and situations. It is hasty to get the assertion that an ideal leadership last 5 years. A group should balance the advantages and disadvantages, applies multiple ways to achieve success under the most suitable length of leadership.

评语:例子翔实,很有说服力,看了我自己都想重新改观点了(我写了是大致赞同作者的)。这篇文章很有argument风格,比如说对那个surest的举他因证明,现在我又感觉,不一定非要同意或者反对题目,在论题范围内讨论自己的观点就可以了,只论述不跑自己的TS,就没问题。issue感觉最好不要这样写,对作者的观点持反对意见,也应该把自己的观点正面说出来,形成自己的推理体系,把作者的观点加个not作为论点,可能会吃亏,呵呵,再讨论吧。
