TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
Society development stems from researches in varieties of realm. Considering the premises leading to success in these researches, I fundamentally agree that individual interests contribute a lot on this way. Besides, overmuch concern on contribution to society can to some extent impede research, as research itself is of the nature with unknown results. However, for any human being activities, there are regulations to confine the main directions away from treacherous and evil purposes, including researches.(提纲式的开头,很好,但问题是那一句是ts呢)
Undoubtedly, interests are indispensable in every step on the way to approach significant progress in research.
As a matter of fact, only based on strong motivation and then through the formidable failures, and later with deep recognition and accumulated experience, can progress inevitably happen. (漂亮的句子)None of these steps does not require interests. Without interest, the research would not be launched at all. Also without interest, researchers are not able to come across the unavoidable failures-- biologists have to bear the survival rate during the cell culture, and physicians have to wait for months to get an occasion of collision in the collider to obtain data. And apparently, if substantial knowledge background is not established, no essential progress can be reached. (这句和interest的关系?)On the contrary, to be overly concerned with the result may diminish the enthusiasm in the individual and thus lead to the absence of distinctive originality. All in all, human being needs stimulation to conquer the inertia and fear about failures and interests undeniably play such a role.
Besides, research itself is to exploit the unknown future, and it’s often it is often difficult to decide whether the research is valuable according to the extent to which it benefits our society. On one hand, nobody will be able to predict the result of a research. As great as U.S military who owing the most talented researchers in the world, the Star War didn’t escape the fate to fail in debate after consumed tremendous funding and time. Being the most famous contemporary technology company, Motorola also made a big mistake to utilize the Iridium Satellites last century. (例子很新额)Does that mean that no researches on military and communication technology should be forbidden since then on? Of course not.(有问有答,呵呵,但是没看懂一点是这个问题提的跟例子个关系。。隐含的要攻击的逻辑是失败了就不应该研究,但文中没说) On(To) the contrary, later researcher can learn valuable experience in these failures and try to steer away in their future work. On the other hand, there are also many cases that the temporal research which has not much contribution can contribute to the future development in other areas. Just consider the Maxwell equations, which was viewed a theorized complexity and not verified until decades later. However, the benefits brought about by the tangled equations is tremendous-- optical fiber(牛!, telecommunication such as TV, cell phones and PC, just to name a few. In short, undue concerns with the social contribution in the short term are always beyond the predictions and may result in vain.
However, the pursuit of individual interests by scholars and researchers should not consist of treacherous and evil interests that may damage the well-being of individuals or society as a whole.
(韦小宝书上的原话最好改一下,一句话一模一样会被e-rater 判为雷同。貌似还有下一句)There are still conventions, regulations, moral and ethic commitments that scientists must obey. To be specific for individuals, nobody is supposed to perform researches on how to harm the benefits or even the lives of others. To be macroscopic for mankind, destructive nuclear weapons, human clone technology, advancement with the price of contaminating environment are all beyond the rationality of research, no matter how curious the researches are towards them. After all, every person is a part of the society and we should consider the benefit of the human being by standing at a respective and wise position.
In conclusion, it’s not reasonable to regard the society contribution as the only scale to weigh the researches. Tolerance with the mistakes or vain results is acceptable as long as it can provide experience to future research. Meanwhile the individual interests should always be encouraged insofar as the positive and virtuous research, because where there is a will, there is a hope
评语:作者的语言水平已经毋庸置疑了。一些逻辑细节注意一下,就是范文了。积极向上,呵呵。 |
