Should the scholars and researchers follow by their own interests? Instead, should they be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society more? As for me, I strongly concede
(用法错误,屈服、承认,有些不太情愿的意思)with the speaker that scholars should pursue their own interests rather than emphasize the possible so-called contributions involved. Without their research conflicting with the general social interest, (要么用if引导,更好些or 用so long as)scholars are free to pursue whatever they want in the realm of science and art.
Basically, interest is the best motivation, which can inspire the scholars to strive for the final success they have expected or even not(干脆不要). As the popular saying goes, "interest is the best teacher". It is the human nature that we have stronger willing to get the things in which we are more interested. The scholars admit of no exception
Many contributions, expected or unexpected, were made during the pursuit of the individual interests.
(放在后面的段落吧,与本段主题无关)For example, motivated by his strong interest on math, the young Galois read the books of famous mathematicians like Euler and Cauchy with unimaginable enthusiasm. In his brief but brilliant life, Galois made great contributions to the foundation and development of abstract algebra. Similarly, stimulated by the austere interests on the science, Marie Curie devoted herself to the realm of science. During her lifelong research, she discovered 9 chemical elements accidentally or intentionally, perhaps the most famous one of which is the radium. By confining their research to beneficial social contributions, scientists may lack the inspiration of personal interest to overcome the obstacles and accomplish such great contributions.
Moreover, no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic they are, interests will possibly turn out to be great contributions to the human society. The idea that is
(删除,啰嗦) considered unusual or ridiculous may reflect its value in the future. The capability of foreseening the perspective of the research are (is) absence in most of us (beyond most of us, 会好点) and we shouldn't make irresponsible remark on the issues we don't quite understand. Mendel’s interest on heritage and the laws he established were considered nonsense at their first appearance. But history finally gives him the crown he deserves because of his great contributions. In the light of this, it is encouraged to persist on pursuing the interests of theirs own.
While the scholars are on their way to their interests, they don't need to consider the unknown question that (删) what contribution it may bring about. Instead, they should take the possible harms (harm,我查了,不可数) into consideration. Albeit the scholars are free to pursue the individual interest, they have to obey the some general accepted moral and ethic commitments.(不错) For instance, the clone of human beings are
(is) generally regarded as immoral and banned by most governments in the world. The intention of those biologists who are interested in the cloning of human should be disapproved. Similarly, the abuse of the science into the produce of mass destruction weapons like nuclear weapons are always being denounced. It is free for the scholars to be interested in some controversy issue, but whether should they take them into (加上actual research and even)application is highly questionable.
In summary, the scholars should pursue the individual interests instead of emphasizing the possible contributions. History tells us that most contributions are made though the pursuit of the individual interests. We have the freedom to be interested in anything we would love to, but there is no freedom without restriction.(还要补充下,很突然,虽然知道你表达什么,但是还是要去动下脑筋)
