What can understanding the past help us in the recent days? It is always a frequently asked question. Some people may believe, as the speaker asserts, that to understand the past is unable to instruct the present because the society they are living in is new and complicated. In my point of view, this conclusion is not appropriate, and understanding of history indeed plays a dominant role in the modern society in guiding our way of life and sometimes even warning us from dangers.


First of all, we have to admit that, there's a lot of difference between the past and the recent. Technology is high speedily developing, people are immersed in new inventions which largely facilitate lives every day, and people's way of living has been greatly changed. However it is very important and clairvoyant for people to understand history. Every year, there are countless discoveries on the past things have been released by those brilliant historians. Through their findings, we get to know our ancestors' living in the past, understand ourselves better and gradually, we even can find out that these is a close relation between the present and the past, no matter how different they look like on the surface. The research on the development of Chinese helped the Chinese people to understand how the Chinese characters have been changed through hundreds of years and why their shape has been changed for several times. Through understanding past we know that if a country wants to increase its literacy rate, its language should be easier for all the people to learn, read and write. Without understanding the past, we are unable to understand the present.


Secondly, the understanding of history can offer guidance for living in the present in aspects. History is like a mirror which can reflect the present in many ways. Through the understanding of history, we can always find something in common with the present, and it can always provide suggestions and solutions when people of different time encounter similar difficulties. Chinese government efficiently control the spread of A/H1N1 based on the experience learn from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndromes outbreak in 2003. And now in this sub prime mortgage crisis, many American economists are trying to find a way out from understanding the experience of 1920's financial crisis. Someone even found the words written by Karl Max which has predicted the crisis hundreds of years ago in his work Da Kapital.


Furthermore, understanding the past can also remind us to avoid the dangers and tragedies ever happened before, which also guide us towards the right road in the present. Through understanding the history, we can get to know how the World War II broke out, and why those innocent people were killed. Based on the understanding of the past, we are warned about the cruelty of extreme Nazism and destructive power of war. Nowadays, the whole world keeps an eye on the former Nazi countries in case they will raise aggressions again. And the development and use of nuclear power is limited in case it might be used in war. Keeping peace and avoiding war, this is what the history has taught us. Understanding the past undoubtedly enables us to find the correct way in the present.

To sum up, the guiding role of understanding history can not be ignored as the history is always the origin of the present and it also mirrors many aspects of recent life. When we are bewildered at the present, we can turn to the past experience, when we encounter difficulties, we can turn to the past experience, and when we get lost, we also can find the way out from understanding of the past.
