"In any academic area or professional field, it is just as important to recognize
the limits of our knowledge and understanding as it is to acquire new facts and
information."
Body:
The speaker asserts that the recognization of the limits of our knowledge and understanding is equally important to the aquarance of new facts and information. On balance, I fundamentally accede to this statement.
To compare the imoirtance of these two processes of studying, we can not ignore the complex interelationships between the two. Sucrates of ancient Greek says that one thing he knows is that he knows nothing, which is an extreme generalization of the relationships between the two. And it is not difficult to find that the two caused and supplement each other and therefore cannot be divided at all.
On one hand, recognization of the limits of their knowledge and understanding is a most significant motivation and reason for human beings to pursue more new facts and imformation. For instance, in ancient Greek, Hippasus’s discovery that the square of 2 is not expressible as a quotient of any two intergers stimulates the exploration and invention of inrational number which greatly extends the knowledge and understanding in field of mathematics. If Hippasus fails to realize the limits of the rational numbers, mathematicians will continue their ignorance of inrational numbers for a lot more years. In fact, it is recognization of the limits of gained knowledge and understanding that promotes the development of science. Without knowing about the limit of the earth, human beings would not desire to explore the universe. Before founding the limits of the application of classic mechanics founded by Newton, scientists were not interested in micromechanics. The recognization of the limits of aqcuired knowledges and understandings raise the curiousness of human beings, pushed them to research and discover new phenomenons and theories and therefore promotes the development of the society.
On the other hand, only by dealing with new facts and information, can people recognize their limits of knowledge and understanding. During a significantlly long time, our knowledges about creatures were limited in the living ones,.However, gaining informations about the bones and fossils in the layers of the rocks made us know the limits and then break it up by the development of
paleotol. In fact, learning new facts and informations should include learning the limits of our knowledges and understandings since continuing seeking for new facts and information prevent people from becoming arrogant or content to their knowledge and understanding by telling them their ignorance and limits.
However, it will be quite difficult for people to recognize limits of their knowledges and understandings when the limits mentioned in the statement when the speaker refers to the exact and explicit extent by saying “limits”, especially when people know little about things out of the limits of their knowleges and understandings. Under this circumstance, acquiring new facts and informaion tend to be more important than knowing the limits, in my point of view.
In sum, I agree that the recognization of the limits of our knowledges and understandings and the aquirement of new facts and information are of same importance, yet we can not neglect the feasibility of finding the limits without new facts and informations.
