The belief of people is the valuation   , if people compromises, it means that people do not believe themselves. Which is more harmful is not absolute. It is can be discussed between different situations. For example, people have religious belief, circumstances in law or academic.
Many religions have been established around the world, different religions have various beliefs which can be used to differentiate religions. Take the example of Christian religion, people belong to this religion tend to treat the doctrine as the first rule, they believe that people who advocate Jesus and keep the doctrine in mind will enter the heaven after they die. People will pray every week to get spirit promoted and to be bathed in the holy church. Once they compromise their belied means they decide to betray the Christian religion, since then they lose the protect from the god. In most situations, people will do such thing, because it means not loyal, some people even will get the condemn.
In the field of science, scholars have different directions in one discipline, when researching for a long time , they will form their own understand about their research, then they may publish paper which can be edited in SCI or some other journals. However, people should realize that truth is generated from inquiries. Any ideas should be verified before using it. Take the example of concepts from civil engineers, which are based on plenty of experiments. Take the example of Hooke’s law, it is based on a hypothesis, and then Hook himself still contended whether this is true, In order to ensure it, he did  consistently tests. In final, he made it. So, it is not necessarily that people need adhere to his belief without any conditions. It is based that the belief is true.
Judges, who determine whether the victims are guilty often take the law as reference. To some extent , laws as the standard maintain the equality of the society. When making judgments, people cannot rely on their own standard which is various, so in order to persuade people, judges must adhere to laws.
In conclusion,  it cannot confirm which is more harmful, because different situations have different standards.
