TPO 25 - Question 2
问题
Some people do not enjoy shopping and shop only when they have a specific purchase to make. Others like to go shopping for pleasure whether or not they have something to buy. Which do you prefer and why?
严重不喜欢逛街 浪费时间 好玩的事情多着呢
参考答案
I prefer go shopping when I need to buy something. First of all, it would save money. Being a student, I only have 1000 yuan budget every month. If I go shopping often without any specific purposes, I would waste my pocket money simply because of the cost that is not that necessary. Second, it would save time. I’m often swamped by the schoolwork, like, lately, I have to finish the papers on media development, presentations of cinema management and team discussion about the human right movement. If I go shopping without certain needs and just hang around, I would waste the precious time for study or rest.
参考答案
I think I belong to the first group of people. I just don’t like doing things without an aim. It’s a waste of time and money going shopping when I don’t even know what I need. I think I’m a pragmatic person. I only go shopping when I want something. Like, if I want a computer, I’ll go to a digital shop. Otherwise, I would never go there. Also, I just don’t get pleasure from purchasing since I always have to pay. And when I’ve bought something, I don’t feel like owning it. It’s doomed to be consumed or used up. Things will come and go.

TPO 25 - Question 3
阅读材料
Split Graduation
Traditionally, the university holds one ceremony for all graduating students, during which students are awarded their diplomas. Beginning this year, however, the university will hold two graduation ceremonies. Under the new arrangement, half the graduating students will participate in the first ceremony, and the other will participate in a second ceremony to be held the following day. Administrators cite two reasons for the change. First, the number of students and increased in recent years, and since diplomas are awarded individually, the single ceremony has become uncomfortably long. Also, the hall where the ceremony is held is too small to accommodate the growing audience of friends and family members.
听力材料
1. You know, I wish they wouldn't do this.
2. Why?
3. Well, I think it's unnecessary, I mean, as far as the first reason goes.
4. Yeah, sure, it takes a long time to have everyone receive their diploma individually, especially now that there are more students, but there's an easy way to make it shorter.
5. What's that?
6. Reduce the number of speeches.
7. I mean, a lot of people give speeches, students, professors, administrators, the president of the university.
8. Do we really need that many speeches?
9. Probably not, and a lot of the speeches are pretty boring anyway, so, yeah, we probably could cut out a few.
10. Yeah, and I don't think their second reason's very good either, about the space.
11. How's that?
12. The problem isn't the size of the hall.
13. It's that they allow students to invite too many people to come and watch.
14. All they need to do is reduce the number of guests each graduating student gets to invite.
15. Yeah, I guess that could solve the problem.
16. Yeah, I mean, right now each graduating student can invite up to ten people.
17. That's too many.
18. At most schools, students only get to invite like four or five people.
19. It we just said, "OK, you can only invite six people."
20. That'll still be more than most other schools and the ceremony could stay the way it is.
问题
The woman expresses her opinion about the university's plan. Briefly summarize the plan. Then state her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
参考答案
The university is going to split the graduation ceremony, which means students will be divided into two parts to participate in it. However, the woman disagrees with this plan, and she has two reasons for that. Firstly, even though students are granted individually, which takes a lot of time, they would have a shorter ceremony simply by university reducing the number of speeches made by professors, administrators, president and so on. Secondly, she denies the excuse of size of the hall. She thinks that the core issue why the ceremony is crowded lies on the number of people, because right now university allows students to invite up to ten guests, which is far more than the other universities. Students will no longer suffer if they can only invite at most six family members or friends.
参考答案2
The university decides to hold two ceremonies because the number of students is increasing, hence making the ceremony too long and because the hall is too small to hold so many students. The woman doesn’t agree with this proposal. As for the first reason, the woman thinks the real reason why the ceremony is too long is that there are too many speeches. Students, professors and administrators all make speeches. Reducing some of the speeches will shorten the ceremony so there is no need to hold two ceremonies. As for the second reason, the woman thinks the hall is big enough to hold all the students. Problem is that right now, each student gets to invite too many guests. So the university can just reduce the number of guests each person can invite. Still, there is no need to hold two ceremonies.

Cultural Lag
Technological change occurs very rapidly in modern society-sometimes more rapidly than many people are prepared for. As a result, when new technology emerges, people may struggle for a time to adapt to it. This period of transition, when people are adjusting to technological change, is known as cultural lag. 问题
Using the example of the telephone, explain the concept of cultural lag.
权威示范(这里的红色标记不再是模板 而是细节和重点)
Cultural lag is a period of transition, when people get used to a technological change. The professor gives an example of the telephone. At the end of the nineteenth century, when telephone became widely available, only businesses used it. But the majority of the public didn’t value its use for personal communication, because, for example, some of them didn’t like to communicate without face-to-face, others considered it rude to call someone without visiting him or her in person. However, this attitude towards telephone changed over the 30 years thereafter. Talking to someone on the phone is no longer rude or abnormal. For example, friends like to call each other just for a chat, and the rules of politeness have also changed, like no one would consider the personal call impolite unless it is made late at night.
参考答案2
Cultural lag is a period of transition when people adjust to new technologies. In the lecture, the professor uses telephone to illustrate this concept. When telephone was invented, only businesses used it because they realized that telephone could benefit them and help them. The general public thought calling someone on the phone was rude because it missed the personal regard. And some people just didn’t like talking to people without seeing their face. However, after a period of time, the cultural lag, the public started to accept telephone. Almost every home had one. Everyone began to use telephone. Friends would call each other to chat. And people didn’t consider calling someone rude as long as they follow certain rules of politeness.

6. Yeah, but that's OK cause I really want to live alone next semester anyway.

听力原文
1. Rocks near the Earth's surface are directly exposed to elements in the environment such as air and water, and also to conditions such as temperature change as well as to living organism.
2. And this exposure to the environment can actually cause even huge rocks to break into smaller pieces.
3. This process is called weathering.
4. Let's talk about a couple ways weathering occurs.
5. First of all, rocks are often exposed to water.
6. In cold wet environments rocks can break due to water freezing inside of them.
7. How does this happen?
8. Well, as I am sure you know, when water freezes it expands and over time this can lead to weathering.
9. Um, imagine a rock with a small opening or crack in it.
10. It rains and water gets into the crack and stays there.
11. Then, at night, the temperature drops and water inside the crack freezes.
12. This growing, expanding ice pushes outward on either side of the crack causing it to get slightly bigger.
13. When this happens again and again, the crack becomes larger and eventually pieces of the rock break off.
14. OK, weathering can also be caused by plants, by a plant growth.
15. If a plant seed gets blown into the crack of a rock, it may take root.
16. And its root will grow down into the rock.
17. The plant's roots can cause the rock to break down, uh, fracture.
18. You may have seen this with large trees growing on top of a rock, a great example of this.
19. Usually there's enough dirt in a crack of a rock or on top of a rock to allow a tree to start growing there.
20. As the tree grows over the years, the tree's roots extend downward into the crack and crevasses of the rock in search of water and nutrients.
21. Over time, the roots get bigger and grow deeper, widening and enlarging the cracks, causing the rock to break apart.
问题
Using points and example from the lecture, explain two ways weathering occurs.
参考答案
The professor explains two ways weathering occurs. Firstly, the exposure to water, which means that the rock breaks because of freezing water inside it which would then expand. To be more specific, if the rains get into cracks, it will freeze due to low temperature. Then the growing expanding ice pushes outward, causing the rock to break off little by little. The second way of weathering happens under plant growth, which means after the plant seeds get down to take a root, it will grow into the rock, causing it to fracture. A good example for it is big trees growing on the top of a rock. They gradually extend down their roots for nutrients and water, as a result, widening and enlarging the cracks they grow and breaking it apart at last.
参考答案2
The professor talks about two ways weathering occurs. The first way is by water. When it rains, the water can fall into the cracks of rocks. At night, when temperature drops, the water will freeze. And when water freezes, it expands so that it will push the both sides of the cracks. Gradually, pieces of rocks will break off. The second way is by plants. Plant seeds can take roots in cracks and crevices of rocks since there is enough dirt and water. When roots grow and extend downward to find water, they enlarge and widen the cracks and crevices and so the rocks will break down.

He has said some really sexist/dangerous/harmful things.

Writing a whole song about killing your girlfriend/wife is problematic.

Some say that his lyrics damage the image of the hip-hop/rap community and hurt it's chances of opening up to the world.

Parents should be in the process of helping their children to choose a university.
Use specific reasons and details in your response.

参考答案

I think parents should help their children choose a university because they have more experience. They may have graduated from certain universities or colleges. However, children’s life is confined in the area of high school or home. Parents can give advice about what the university is like and what is it like to live alone in a big city and what is it like to live alone in a country side. In addition, they can help find information about colleges, coz there are so many out there. Children may not have enough time to do all the research.

参考答案

The university decides to switch from traditional-bound textbooks to electronic devices. They think this can help save student’s money. They also think the device will be an effective study aid. However, the woman in the conversation doesn’t like the idea. First of all, she thinks this is not gonna save money because students will need more than one device. If the device breaks down, they have to buy a new one. If the device comes with new features, they will also want to have the new one. Secondly, she thinks the screen is too small to handle. The keypad and buttons are small. It’s actually pretty hard to do highlighting, underlighting or even selecting. So it’s not an effective study aid.

Swarm intelligence is a phenomenon that insects as a group will demonstrate greater complexity than the behavior of an individual member. The result is they may perform some complex tasks that an individual insect can’t complete. Just like the example of ants. When a large group of ants walk on a tree in search of some food, they find that there's a wide space between the tree and the food. Any single ant alone can't cross the space. Therefore, what they do is that one ant walks forward to the end of the branch and holds onto the branch, and then it stretches its body forward so that the next ant can walk across it. The next ant does the same thing. Then one after another, they form a bridge so that the rest of the ants can cross over to reach the food. So this is how swarm intelligence works.

Swarm intelligence is a group behavior that does more complex things than does the individual behavior. The professor uses ants as an example. In the example, the ants are moving on the tree branch to find food. When they reach the end of the branch, they find out that the food is on another branch. And there is a space between the two branches. Then, an ant will go and uses its legs to hold on the end of the branch and stretches its body forward into the space. Then, another ant will hold on the end of the first ant and also stretches its body into the space. Then one after another, other ants do the same thing to form a bridge to connect the two branches. So the rest of the ants can cross the space to reach the food source.

The woman’s problem is that there is a time conflict between her poetry class she needs to teach and her cousin’s retirement party. One possible solution is that she could ask the male professor to cover the class for her. The other solution is that she could teach the poetry class herself and arrive late at the party. I personally suggest her to first solution. This is because her cousin's retirement party is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and she wouldn't have another chance to attend it if she missed this one. As for the poetry class, although the male professor hasn't been teaching poetry for years, he could probably handle the class with his teaching experience and the materials provided by the woman. Therefore, I'd suggest her to go for the first solution.
参考答案2
The female professor is having a scheduling conflict. Her poetry class is at the exact same with her cousin’s retirement party. There are two possible solutions. The first one is to let the male professor help teach the poetry class. But the male professor hasn’t taught poetry for years. The second solution is to teach the class and cover the review session herself. But she’ll be late for the retirement party. If I were the female professor, I would choose the second solution. Teaching is the responsibility of teachers while having a party is just a personal life activity. Responsibility should always come first. Plus, students are going to have an exam next week. The review session must be very important for them. The male professor cannot help cover the review session.bi

参考答案2
The professor talks about a couple of advanced technologies Roman cities used to expand. The first technology is an advancing building material called concrete. Concrete can harden under water. Romans use this concrete to build strong bridges across wide rivers. This bridge can also transport heavy materials. So Roman cities can grow on both sides of the river. The other technology is called aqueduct. Aqueduct is a water channel that can move water from water source to the city. The flow is very steady. And tremendous water can be transported to great distances. So the Roman cities can expand without locating near rivers.

TPO28 QUESTION 1
Students have to complete various types of academic assignments in school.
Choose one of the assignments below and explain why you think it is beneficial for students.

1.Research paper
2.Class presentation
3.Group project
参考答案
Personally, class presentation is beneficial for students. First of all, before presentation, you must do some research about your topic, then organize the materials into report, even sometimes, you would like to interview some people. this process is as same as the research paper and group project. Secondly, presentation is showing yourself, this would help you improve your confidence.
参考答案
I think the first one, writing research paper, is the most beneficial for students. If you are going to write a research paper, the first step is to go to the library to find useful materials. Or you may go to the Internet. So you practice you search skills from doing this. After finding all the relevant materials, you need to do a lot of reading and need to group them in a formal way. So you learn how to read and write a formal paper. This may help you develop good habits of doing research and put you in a favorable condition when applying for colleges.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? To protect the health of young children, advertisements for candy and junk food should not be shown on television.Use specific reasons and details in your response.

自我评价
想一个单词造成了明显的停顿,小的停顿后都会不自觉的“呃”,超时

参考答案
I don’t agree with the statement because advertisements for candy and junk food aren’t just aimed for children. They are for the general public. Sometimes candy and junk food can serve useful purposes. Candy can help you after you drink bitter medicine. Junk food is fast and convenient. More importantly, canceling the advertisements won’t do much to protect the health of young children. Young children can know the existence of candy and junk food in many ways. They can know it from their parents, friends and their parents’ friends. So protecting young children is not a good excuse to cancel the advertisements.

Keep the Music Building Open Later
Currently, the campus music building'which has practice rooms students can reserve for playing instruments'closes nightly at nine p.m. I think the university should keep the building open until midnight. Often, student musicians want to practice their instruments later at night, and right now there" s no good place for them to do that. Also, lots of students want to use the practice rooms, so if s often difficult to reserve one. If the building were open more hours, though, it would be easier to accommodate the large number of students who want to reserve rooms.

参考答案
A student proposes to open the music building later so that students can practice there late at night. Also, this will make it easier to accommodate the large number of students who need to reserve the room. In the conversation, the woman thinks this is a great idea. She says that now she has to practice in the dorms. But this is disturbing to other students, because practice with musical instrument will create lots of noise when other students are either sleeping or studying. She also says that always before big concerts, everyone in the orchestra needs room to practice. It’s super hard to book a room. The man also met similar problem. So if the musical building can open later, this will definitely help ease the problem.

自我评价
1.难度好像上来了
2.阅读没有读完,感觉没有明显的分成两个点,其实是第一个点 只看到了 want to practice,没看到 want to practice late at night
3.听的时候也是这样的感觉,
4.阅读题目没有记下来  导致第一句很结巴
5.没有说完,非常卡壳
6.细节方面
And we really could use more time slots,  especially just before the big concerts

Refute-and-Persuade
Sometimes companies realize that consumers may have developed a negative impression of a product. One way in which they can resolve this problem is by using an advertising technique known as refute-and-persuade. Refute-and-persuade means that in advertising a product, the company first indicates its awareness of the product's disadvantage. But then the company refutes or challenges that disadvantage by demonstrating how the advantage of buying and using the product makes up for any limitation it may have. In this way, companies can persuade consumers to purchase a product despite its drawbacks.
自我评价
1.阅读没有读完
这个定义总结的时候抓不住重点 重点是 方式  还是目的?
2. 听力里面相同意义的重复的部分 在自己陈述的时候就一句带过了
比如 听力 里面  我记了 extra cost is worth ,save money in the long run 这个就可以合并
3.超时

参考答案 定义部分
Refute-and-persuade is an advertising technique that companies first admit the problems of their products and then refute the problems. 方式
第二种
The reading talks about refute-and-persuade, which is an advertising technique that company first indicates the products\' disadvantage, but then refutes it to persuade consumers to purchase. 方法+目的
第三种
The technique of refute-and-presuade is an advertising technique, in which companies first indicate the disadvantage of their products, then they challenge it by emphasizing advantage. 方法
总结部分
The professor uses an example to illustrate the technique. In the example, a professional cook is talking about pots and pans of a company. The cook begins by stating that the pots and pans are indeed very expensive and other companies’ pots and pans cost less. But then the cook starts to explain why it is still worthwhile to buy the pots and pans. She says that the company can provide a life-time warranty. If there is anything wrong with the pots and pans, the company will replace them for free. So this helps save customers’ money in the long run.

question 5

参考答案
The man is having a problem that originally he was to interview the director of a play. But the director is having a bad cold. There are a couple of solutions. The first solution is to wait until the director feels better. But then his article won’t come out before the play. The second solution is to interview the lead actor. But the man worries that the lead actor won’t have as much to say as the director.
If I were the man, I would choose to the second solution. In this way, at least his article will appear before the play. Even if the lead actor doesn’t know all the stuff the play, it’ll still be interesting to get a different perspective. Also, the man still can interview the director and put the article on the next week’s newspaper.

Mike is writing an article about the school play that is due to happen this week. But the problem is that the director who he has been planning to interview has caught sick, and it’s impossible to interview her today. He has two solutions. One is to wait until the director feels better and then interview her; or he can interview the lead actor instead

Mick are writing a newspaper article about a school play, but the problem is that the play director who planned to interviewed caught a sever cold. The conversation provides him 2 options. He could wait until the director cures to interview her. Or he could interview the actor leader instead.
