185"Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
As I see, I may disagree with the speaker’s first statement. Every coin has two sides. There are many scandals that are not only useful but also harmful, such as the scandals about society and the many big movie stars. On the other hand, I fundamentally agree with the speaker’s second contention, for the influence of scandals is more attractive for people than what the speakers says or the reformer does.
On the one hand, I agree that scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Admittedly the speaker can give us a very agitated speech which is attractive for everybody, and, the reformer makes his significant programs that may change our life, which is also absorbing. However, when a scandals occurs, people’ attentions immediately are changed by the big entice of scandal. As everyone are fond to know the others’ privacy that they do not know or just know little. Once a scandal occurs, many things people do not know will present in their eyes. Consider, for instance, the Clinton sex scandal that presents us many interesting and amusing stories. This scandal almost attracts the global world attention. Similarity, the Watergate scandal still absorbs many peoples’ attention until now. Such a lasting influence that the speaker or reformer cannot make. Therefore, scandals are more attractive and interesting for people than what the speaker says or the reformer does.
On the other hand, when it comes to some aspects, such as scandals about society, academia and many big movie stars, scandals may be not only useful but also harmful to some extent. On a personal level, for example, a scandal happens on a movie star. It is useful for amusement journalists because they have many things to report. However, it is harmful to the movie star and he (she) may suffer many physical and mental pressures. It follows that whether useful or harmful is judged by concrete people. Everyone may have different attitude judged by different criterions. Similarity, on a social level, the scandals always show many defects of the social mechanism or social problems. The occurrence of scandal can accelerate the speed of settling the defects, which may be useful. With the scandals happened, however, it may arose many losses of society. That is the harmful effect to society.Consequently, on a social level, scandal is harmful or useful only judged by the aspects you stand.
In sum, scandals have more advantages to absorb our attention than what the speaker says or reformer does. However whether it is useful or harmful is merely judged by the different people that hold different standard or aspects.
