。。。。。。。under autocratic nations。。。。。。。。。。。” 。。。。。。。due to some causes in polity or in religion。。。。。。。。”
"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
Can the greatness of individuals only be determined(改为judged好些,客观点) by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries? The speaker claims so. I fundamentally share the same viewpoint with the author; however, considering the achievement individual makes(是不是应该用made?) should take a case-by-case analysis.(我觉得这句好别扭,有点显得中文化,应该用被动型态好些。或者说:“we should take a case-by-case analysis of the achievement”不知道是不是自己见识少了)
First of all, under the control of some politicians or religions, some true theories conflicting with the ideas of authorities were hardly be accepted by contemporaries people since the politicians or religions regarded them as evilness and resisted the spreading among citizens while the posterities are no longer affected by these factors and can evaluate the results(用those achievements?) without resistance thus have(which lead to?) a clear and precise recognizing of the theories(这整个长句我也觉得有点中文化了,我写得话,会将posterities前置,以Comparing with their posterities.......... To supporting the idea, we need ( just need to ?) look no further than Bronu(这应该是Bruno吧?), an Italian thinker, who insisted the truth that universe is infinite. Since the claims did harm to the government of Roman religion and Bruno didn't compromise any more (我觉得这里用made no compromise好些,同样不知道是不是自己见识少了), he was fired to death at Roman Ground and his theory couldn't be evaluated in a proper way. After several centuries, when individuals weren't controlled by religions, they came to realize the worth of his claim and recognized them as correct. From this example, we can clearly see (用see clearly that可能更西些)under autocratic nations, the greatness by(of?) individuals was hardly recognized by their contemporaries for thinking and value systems were controlled and persons in this situation hadn't the (用had no,hadn’t多见于口语中) rights of testify the true or false of the theory.
In addition, the achievement can't be decided by the people at their era when the capacity of science comprehension and art appreciation couldn't reach the same level of creator's talent (talent多余了吧?也可以level后面全省掉,简洁些), which made persons couldn't understand the expressed meaning, let alone to say recognize the greatness of individuals (let alone 后面不用跟to,直接接say). Take Galois, a French preeminent mathematician and a founder of Group theory, as an example. Since Group theory couldn't be understood by his contemporary splendid mathematicians, people at his era never realized his outstanding contribution to mathematical development, which made him unknown to public. Until through (这一句我都觉得好别扭,把“until”和“did”都省啊,两句的时间关系仍然没有变啊) several-decade enduring efforts of a large number of experts, did the public realize his irreplaceable contribution to mathematics and physics. With the development of intelligence, people came to realize the value of some theories and artists which were neglected (用for many year?)many years. Persons(老是person,是不是应该换people了?) in 19th century paid little attention to Van Gogh, a preeminent (前面用过了,换unsurpassed怎么样?)impressionistic painter, and his masterpieces never made a stir among the public. Before his death, his painting was sold only one at a low price (我觉得应该是: only one of his paintings was sold, and with a extremely low price), while now, the masterpieces are auctioned at an unbelievable high price since more and more persons realize the value of his work and want to own one. That is why, in my opinion, greatness of individuals, to some extent, should be determined by posterities.
Nevertheless, within the capacity of person's intellect and the instant function to our social development, the evaluation of a famous people can be decided by his contemporaries. Neumann, regarding (用regarded?或者直接省掉) as a father of computer science, instructed the production of large-scale computer by his high intelligence in mathematics and created a new branch, theory of countermeasure, which made him famous at his era and (用have a persistent influences可能更通顺?) persistent influences on our daily life. Mark Twain's famous novels were popular when he is alive since the (不用the吧?)people at that time understood the meaning of them thus appreciated them. That was the main reason why he could get reputation at his era. We can conclude from these instances that if masterpiece can be understood and accepted (加by?)one's contemporaries, it is easier for people to evaluate the value and greatness of individuals.
To sum up, the achievement of celebrities are correctly decided by their offspring when the theories, artists and so forth couldn't be understood or was conflicted to the authority at his era. To some extent, contemporaries also can appreciate and evaluate the masterpieces within their capacities and the permission of authority. Taking one with another, I basically agree with the speaker
