------题目------
People often look for similarities, even between very different things, and even when it is unhelpful or harmful to do so. Instead, a thing should be considered on its own terms; we should avoid the tendency to compare it to something else.
------正文------
In the statement, the speaker claims that it should be avoided to compare a thing to something else, as the comparison could be unhelpful or harmful, and therefore a thing should only be considered on its own terms. However, whiling conceding that to entirely understand a thing, it is necessary to consider its own properties, I disagree with the speaker that similarities should be ignored, for the reason that the procedure for people to understand a thing is to firstly look for similarities and then to consider itself.
Admittedly, only through looking for similarities to learn a thing could be incomprehensive. A Hindi fable comes to mind immediately to support the statement. The story is about several blind men, who try to learn what an elephant looks like. One man touches the ear and claims an elephant should like a fan; the second one touches the tail and asserts an elephant should be similar to a rope; the third one touches the body of the elephant and declares it as a wall; all of rests make similar contention. Obviously, none of them get the correct idea of the elephant as they only manage to perceive a limited idea of the whole. In short, only focusing on similarities on things is not enough to fully understand the thing.
However, understanding the similarities between a thing and others is the fist step of the learning progress. People learn the world from very beginning. To a great extent, every new subject is perceived firstly by its similarities to matters that have already been known, and then regarded as its own terms. One can look no further than how a baby learns the world. An infant has no idea about the world initially. He is only able to receive basic knowledge gradually. Everything to learn deserves a standard. What is cup? A baby may define it as the thing to retain water. The reason that he can recognize a cup despite various sizes, colors, and designs should be the similarity of those cups that they have the ability to contain water. Similarly, adults learn through similarities as well. To prove this, one can recall all general impressions we have in our brain: people’s gender is determined by the similar body shape; mobile phone is a device with buttons of digit number that use for communication. That we are able to recognize a thing as a noun is because of the similarities it appears to the database in our brain. In short, without looking for similarities, nothing could be recognized at all.
What should be conceded is that attention on similarities itself is not enough to realize a thing all-rounded and may cause misunderstanding as the fable mentioned before, therefore a thing should be considered on its own speciality aside from the similarities. Take a rectangle and a parallelogram for instance. One may know that a rectangle has a lot of similarities with a parallelogram, or more specifically saying that a rectangle is a special form of parallelogram. Therefore, to recognize a rectangle well, not only its similarities with a parallelogram should be learned, such as every two sides are parallel to each other, but its special properties should be realized. For example, the internal angle of the rectangle is ninety degrees. Without recognizing both similarities and specialities, analogous matters are not able to be discriminated from others.
In sum, to understand a thing, the tendency of looking for similarities should not be avoided as it is the very first step to perceive a subject, and a thing should be considered on itself as well since only looking on similarities may lead to misunderstanding. |
