Thanks to the abundant food material and superior cooking devices, people can cook tasty and nutritious food much easier than decades ago. Similarly, with the increasingly various education resource and advanced tools, people can receive education more convenient than the older generation.

As there are virtually more choices available for people to ingest, such as vitamin compound and imported food, people can prepare almost all kinds of food for themselves which seems unimaginable for their counterparts living decades ago. Likewise, plenty of education resources are readily accessible and sometimes almost for free in modern lives. For example, there are numerous universities and libraries available leading to an increasing number of high-educated graduates and undergraduates. In addition, official government support for education results in more academic researches being pursuit and imparted to ordinary civilians. Furthermore, the development of publish industry also contributes to the prosperity of books and scientific journals. With diversified education material, people can easily access to any knowledge they would like to learn about, just like easily choosing any food as they wish.

Meanwhile, cooking utensil becomes more sophisticated than ever before, people can cook through plenty of approaches, like using microwave oven. Similarly, learning becomes much more convenient and even portable due to the development of technology. Obviously, the popularity of computer and the internet allows people to obtain knowledge in a totally different way efficiently. People can almost learn about everything they wondered by typing the key words in the website of wiki, in addition, they can communicate with professional professor though oversea video conferences. However, the most amazing part of the revolution of knowledge is that reading becomes portable. Thanks to electronic products like kindle and iPad, people can read nearly anything anywhere at any time if only they want by just sliding the button within less than one second. 【Y or N】The advice from our grandparents have no use for their grandchildren because the world changed a lot during the past 50 years.

Apparently, enormous changes have happened during last half century, including progress in science and technology and improvement of the global economy. Some people may argue that advices from the old generation are no longer referential due to the great variation. However, I strongly insist the idea that, no matter how long it passed, it is essential people should listen carefully to the suggestions offering by grandparents, since all the advices come out of what they had experienced which proved to be useful and helpful. Some of the advices are listed below.

First, people should never be impolite to others. Half century ago, people behaved politely to respect others, making themselves impressive which helped them gain more friends and acceptance. Nowadays, to be polite is still of great importance as before because protocol hardy changes. Besides, politeness, to a large extent, is a prerequisite and key factor leading to success. To be more specific, being polite consistently is an attractive characteristic that can be beneficial when it comes to a promotion competition, that is to say, the more politely one behaves, the more likely he or she gets promoted. It seldom changes during the past 50 years.

Another viewpoint of the old generation is hard working. The old are convinced that success has nothing to do with luck. People need to keep on working hard to make achievements. Take language learning for example, when individuals learn about a new language, no one can memorize thousands of new foreign words without hardworking. Also, it is ridiculous to believe that one can speak foreign language fluently just because he or she is lucky enough. Success without striving is almost impossible 50 years ago; it is true today as well.

Moreover, as the saying goes "never too late to learn". In other words, people should keep on learning no matter which century they are in. Learning makes one ingenious and intelligent which is indispensable for everyone. Compared with their counterparts living decades ago, people today have to devote themselves to learning to a higher degree because of the gradually competitive environment.

In summary, time goes by, but the advice from the old never goes out of style. People should keep on behaving in a polite way, hard working and learning.

The main purpose for people who have jobs is for money rather than social status.


There are sufficient explanations of the phenomena that the majority of people attend job markets rather than remain unemployment. Some choose to work in order to earn basic living, affording family's daily expenditures, while others treat working as an conventional approach to chase social position. In my view, people work for different reasons at different phases.

Incontrovertibly, the primary reason for people working is to maintain livelihood, that is to say, most people, in the main, have to work for money at the very beginning. They need to feed the family, pay their children's tuition fees, repay the loan, and so forth. Once people were laid-off, they may probably preserve the livelihood under the assistance of unemployment benefits for a short period of time. However, depending on the government can never be a permanent solution. Therefore, individuals are required to work for financial reasons.

After a period of time, when people accumulate sufficient fortune, they emerge into the middle-class. People no longer need to worry about ordinary expense and they possess disposable money to invest. At this point, people become sensitive to social status rather than average income. For example, the rich often show charitable giving behavior to help others through which they become famous and well-known for their generosity, they begin to concern about other's opinion and the way they looked. Social status turns into the principal purpose for people who have already tackled basic living problems.

In short, people work diligently, with the highest aim of pursuing the success for particular reasons; livelihood is the chief one, while social position follows when the right time comes.

Some people believe that people should follow their ambitious dreams and goals even they are not realistic, others believe that people should focus on achieving realistic goals.

支持realistic:

People dream various dreams in their lives, ambitious ones or realistic ones. As everyone can live only once, how to distribute the limited time is of great importance. Some support the idea that people should follow their dreams no matter realistic or not while others believe rapt attention should be paid to realistic goals. However, I am thoroughly convinced of the latter opinion because of reasons listed below.

First, achieving realistic goals brings about confidence which is indispensible in the pursuit of dreams, like career target or higher test score. For example, in the study of a foreign language, setting the target of memorizing 10,000 new words within two days is ambitious but also virtually rather impossible, it may result in high pressure and the lost of one's self-confidence. On the contrary, if the goal turns to be pretty realistic one, such as mastering basic words for daily communication within two months, one will not only be capable of speaking a foreign language but also accumulate confidence for the future. Therefore, chasing relatively realistic dreams enable people be avoid of losing confidence.

Moreover, people with ambitious dreams have to break down their dreams into several steps first, that is to say, it's essential to concentrate minds on sub-goals one by one. Without the coming true of basic goals, would people never achieve the success of subsequent steps, not to mention the great ambition. Take the development of personal computer for example, the advent of ipad is almost unimaginable for people living decades ago, it was not realistic at all to manufacture computers without actual keyboards and mouse which also weight so light. However, by focusing on different realistic sub-goals, from touch screens to portable devices, people made it! Consequently, it is more important to focus on basic but realistic goals which are prerequisite for final success.

Admittedly, the majority of people may have more than one dream within their life-time. By achieving dreams which are realistic, people could have enough time to chase others resulting in experience of wonderful lives. If one wants to travel around the world with great passion, he or she may have to prepare enormous amount of money in advance for a long period of time; On the contrary, as future is unforeseeable, in some extreme cases, people may die when none of the dreams comes true because too much attention has been paid on solely unrealistic dream. In other words, if one choose the goal which is more executable, such as travelling to a new city or a foreign country separately, the dream may come true within a few years or even months. What's more, after achieving it, people still have plenty of time left to chase other dreams which dramatically enrich their lives to a large extent.

Although it is motivating for people to chase their ambitious dreams no matter how unrealistic they are, still, I strongly support the idea to chase more realistic ones which can lead people into colorful lives with in limited life-time.

People now tend to refer to various dreams according to the possibility of dreams coming true, that is to say, dreams can be easily divided into two simple extreme categories: realistic ones and unrealistic ones. As life is only once for each individual, how to spend the life-time becomes a primary problem. Should people solely focus on achieving realistic goals or chasing ambitious ones no matter whether they are realistic or not? As far as I am concerned, I strongly support the idea of chasing the ambitious dreams even they are unrealistic because dreams offer us energy to do everything with enthusiasm, those unrealistic but ambitious ones are not realistic at the moment rather than forever, and merely concentrating on realistic ones may kill not only creative ideas but also ambitions which might lead to the suspend of technology progress and social development.

Ambitious dreams provide people with great motive and considerable impetus. Take John Nash, the founder of the theory of Nash equilibrium, for example, he is a famous mathematical genius and devote all his life on the dream of academic achievements which seemed rather unrealistic in his research field decades ago. Thanks to Nash's persistence, the theory of Nash equilibrium became well-accepted ultimately, and it has been and surely will go on playing an important role in numerous areas in both theory and application. What's more, as it is true for all scientific research areas, without those persistent dreams and seemingly crazy ideas, there would never be so much cutting-edge technology and all kinds of modern electronic products. Chasing the dream makes people full of limitless energy and great passion and drives them to be successful.

In addition, the definition of unrealistic is restricted by social development. Goals unrealistic now, to a large extent, might be realistic in the foreseeable future and this true fact should attract full attention. For example, for those living decades ago, it was totally impossible to command the cell phone just by sound; computers with no keyboards were incredible as well, not to mention the idea of operating computers and cell phone by fingers on the screen. However, we can simply realize all of them by iphone 4S and similar smart electronic goods today. Dreams may be unrealistic for a short period of time but, to a large extent, be realistic in the near future. Whether dreams are realistic or not should not be the obstruction that affect aspiring individuals.  

Finally but not the least, merely focusing on realistic dreams may impose restrictions on creative mind which is an critical prerequisite factor of technology progress and social development. As human brain possesses unlimited potential, without the drive of ambitious but unrealistic dreams, one day may come when the pace of human society development dramatically slow down.

In short, thanks to the ambitions of those beautiful minds like that of Nash, aspiring people, full of motivation, can exert themselves to realize great dreams leading to both scientific and social development.

The main role of the university professor is to educate students rather than to do research.

When it comes to the debate about the role professors play in universities, many people believe that professors' top priorities are pursuit of academic research because they are master of cutting-edge scientific and technology knowledge in particular fields, meanwhile, they worry that the pursuit of academic achievement would be affected due to engaging in education. However, I would argue instead that university professors should pay more attention to education and it has no reason to be conflicted with doing research. Reasons are listed below:

To begin with, the most important responsibility of university professors is to impart knowledge which can also attract the attention of talented students, resulting an increasing number of genius diving into certain fields. Only the knowledge be shared and passed on, can more people learn about it and pursue relevant research work. If only a small amount of professors knows and master advanced knowledge, how can the research work process after their retirement? Therefore, taking part in education would brings about no bad effects on research but dramatically encourage more people to join the research which is absolutely beneficial.

On one hand, given the fact that university students, being good at critical thinking, are brilliant ones with creative minds, they always offer valuable ideas during the discussion with professors. Under this circumstance, not only can professors gain inspiration from the discussion, but also learn from smart students who can provide worthy advices resulting in progress of the research. On the other hand, professors, to a large extent, can acquire new knowledge through the process of teaching while review and summarizing. For example, in some movie plots, when professors instruct students, they usually find out slight flaws of the theory or faults of their experiments which means a lot for researchers. The saying will never be outdated that teaching is the best way of learning which suits everyone including university professors.

Education serves as a best way to impart knowledge while providing opportunities for professors to review the research results and improve themselves; focusing on education can undoubtedly promote the development of academic achievements.
