There has been a heat discussion over whether or not should teachers assign homework for stuents [students. TYPO 1] everyday. From my viewpoint, it is always better for teachers not to do so, and the supporting reasons are as follow.
First, assigning homework that is of little value for students can be seen as a waste of students’ time. The situation is especially true in China where classes are usually made up of up to 60 (or even more) students. It is generally aknowledged [acknowledged. TYPO2] that people’s ability to acquire new knowledge differs from one to the next [→another]. Therefore, seldom can teachers assign the proper homework for all the students, for, more often than not, the assignments can be too easy for some while too difficult for the others. For those who find the assignment too easy, they would argue that it is a waste of time, and thus detest doing any more of them; yet for those who fails to accomplish the assignments, they might lose interest in the subject and even lose confidence when knowing that their classmates have finished the assignment quite effortlessly.
Besides, assigning homework for students can sometimes be interpreted as teachers’ lack of trust in them—they do not believe that students would read related materials, books and do excersises[exercises. TYPO3] after class when no requirements have been made upon them. Therefore, teachers tend to use daily assignments as the weapon in their arsenal in order to make sure that students continue to study after class and have better performance in that subject. [呵呵.很形象;d: ] Consequently, students, especially those who are highly self-desplined [self-disciplined. TYPO 4] and have their own study plan would usually be annoyed by being interrupted by teahcers’[teachers’ TYPO5]asssignments [assignments. TYPO6] and by teachers’ [这里的by teachers’其实可以省略]lack of trust in them. This will in trun [turn. TYPO7] harm the relationship of teahcers [teachers. TYPO 8] and students, and may even bring the tension into class.
Based on my own experience, it is fair to say that when in high school, it would not be a bad idea for teachers to give assignments to students, for students who are still teenagers usually fail to make their own study plan and, once the plan is made, are not self-desplined [self-disciplined. TYPO 9] enough to stick to it. Hence, it is more of a necessity for teachers to give homework to students as a guide in their study off-class. Yet things are quite different with college students, for they are grown-ups who are highly aware of the responsibility they have—they have to study hard and do whatever it takes to better prepare themselves for their future jobs, their career development. Therefore, they make their own study plan; they know fairly well what they should do after class; they need no assignments to guide them in the course of study.
In conclusion, it would always be better if teachers do not give assignments to students, and let students make their own study plan.
