I suppose that it is reasonable to say that improving schools is the most important factor for the successful development of a country. Improving schools will enhance the overall ability of people and it can provide people with the same idea towards the world and life, thus reduce the possibility of disagreement between people, and results in a stable environment for development.
Schools are institutions that educate students to build up their sense of moral, cultivate their virtue and develop their capability. And the current leaders and establishers are all from different schools, the future generation would be through different schools, too. Therefore the quality of schools, or the quality of education, would decide the quality of the component of a country: the quality of its people. Thus improving schools would no doubt be benefit to the development of a country. A good example would be schools in Hong Kong, especially universities in Hong Kong. Those universities provide their professors with high wage, thus experts and top studiers come to these universities and students there would gain a top class education. That is an important reason as to why these days, some students who performance the best in the college entering test are willing to study in universities in Hong Kong rather than PKU or THU.
The other example would be schools in Xijiang province. Because of their believe, some students are sent to scripture schools, where they get the different ideas from students in Han nationality. Some of the scripture schools would infuse some dangerous idea to young students and cause chaos in some areas. Thus the stable environment which benefits the development would be ruined. If government could build enough public schools and enroll much more students, the development of those areas would be better.
Although the above examples are all about a certain area, it is proper to expand the idea to a larger area: a country. In short, improving schools would not only cultivate the ability of people to accelerate the development, but help keeping a stable environment for development as well.
The lecture tells us that the spread of zebra mussel can actually be controlled nowadays, as the way they spread is by travelling in ships fresh "ballast water", so just asking the ships to use ocean water can prevent zebra mussel to spread. While the passage states that the spread of zebra mussel cannot be stopped, it is obvious that the lecture has changed the idea.
Furthermore, according to the passage, it seems that once the zebra mussels arrived, they would dominant the whole area, and become a threat to native freshwater fish. Yet in the lecture, we get to know that although zebra mussels might compete with some freshwater fish for food, there food span are not exactly the same as all the other freshwater fish's. Like some fish that lives near the bottom of the water, the arrival of zebra mussels may even increase the amount of them. Thus zebra mussel will not be a threat to freshwater fish population as stated in the passage.
As for the dominant part, the lecture points out that with the booming of zebra mussel, birds or other predators will substantially include this new fish into their menu. Thus although the condition might be the same, that is, zebra mussels do not have predators, as in the passage, the number of them would still be under control by new predators.
