Claim: Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive. Reason: It is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
As the economy goes unsteadily, governments encounter a serious problem- how should they allocate their limited financial support wisely? As a famous Chinese philosopher says, kill the leader firstly and then his army. I believe the major cities play an important role in every country and therefore in order to ensure the progress of society, governments should first and most importantly take major cities into consideration.
In the first place, though the other small can not be ignorable, major cities have the most population and are connected most closely with the worldwide economy system. As we see, the financial crisis in 2008 were generated from the collapse of real-estates in major cities and consequentially the crisis spread from wall- Street to the U.S and finally the whole world. Hence, making sure the major cities are developing is critical for a healthy economy, especially when financial crisis is on-going.
In addition, in the early stage of development, major cities should still be priority concerns because they are representatives and leaders of the other cities. Take what happened to China in 1978 for example. President Deng Xiao Ping launched the open-door-policy and appointed few cities around ports to be tentative and receive special support from the governments. As a result, those cities turned out to be very successful and act like guiding stars for other cites.
However, major cities usually end up with many similar characteristics. Such as imposing skyscrapers, fancy cars, serious traffic problem and crowded streets. Moreover, since people are extremely busy with work, people start neglecting their culture and tradition.
In conclusion, considering the impact of major cities, it is beneficial that government distribute their financial support to major cities. Nevertheless, the claim that nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated in major cities is dubious. |
