Argument145

题目:
A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.

1、调查类错误。(样本数量和随机性;取样是否片面;样本数量太少);
2、条件充分性错误。呼吸中断、短暂醒来并不一定会导致无力锻炼(也许锻炼已形成习惯,而不习惯锻炼的人有力、无力都不会锻炼),更不一定会导致人长胖;
3、打鼾不一定会发胖,即使由于一些原因发胖了,也不应盲目节食啊,这样可能导致更严重的疾病。
In this argument,the arguer recommends that people who snore are more likely to gain weight and suggest that they should try to eat less than normal people and to exercise more.This recommandation is based on a new study that collected data which shows that people who snore tend to gain weight more likely than people who do not.Meanwhile,to further justify this claim,the arguer point out that sleep apnea, which is a side-effect of snoring,would interrupt people's sleep continuously but briefly with the sleeper unnoticing this.Furthermore,the speaker suggest that Anyone who snores should consequently try to eat less than normal people and do more exercise.At first glance,this argument seems very specific and convincing.However,a careful examination of it would unveil how groundless it is.

In the first place,the argument is based on the gratuitous assumption that people who snore would more likely to gain weight than people who do not.Although the arguer state a new study ,there are a myriad of question left after all.Unless the surveyors sampled a sufficient number of people and did so randomly across the entire world spectrum,the survey results are not reliable to gauge people from all over the world generally.If the number of respondents is too small ,the study, in itself,would not ensure representativeness.For example,if the sample included only those who snore and like eating greasy food,then the result would no doubt suggest a much higher posibility that these people would be out of shape.Or the study be started in a relatively special place district where fat person are common and a majority of them have the habbit of snoring.Thus, before giving this study,the arguer should otherwise give enough data about the survey which would be more convincing.

In the secong place,the arguer uses a phenomenon which is called sleep apnea,and point out that this would cause interruption to the sleeper ,making them waking up briefly and continuously with this unnoticed,and therefore would make people sleepy and tired and unwilling to exercise.The argument assumes too hastily that sleep apnea will necessarily result in the interruption, and even if so ,people would not necessarily escape the exercise,perhaps they have formed the habit to do exercise everyday.Besides,common sense inform me that a variety of other factors may as well cause people to gain fat,a case in point ,people who inherit the fat gene from their parents,or are keen on sweet foods
and so on.

Thirdly,the arguer propose that people who snore should eat less than people who do not and do more exercise as well.It is undoubted that people who are out of shape should do more exercise to keep fit,however is it also helpful to limit people's appetite to solve the problem?I can not agree with it hastily.As is known to all, people who are always hungry would not get enough energy to do daily work ,and doing so may cause more serious health problems,too.

To sum up,the argument is not well reasoning and lacks credibility because the evidence citeed in the analysis does not lead to strong support to what the arguer maintains.To make the argument more convincing,he may as well provide sufficient evidence to prove that snoring can cause corpulence,and before draw the conclusion ,he should ponder over the measure more carefully avoiding causing much seriouse problems.
