43."To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."

The speaker's statement assert that a public official hold effective leadership depending on whether he or she possess the highest ethical and moral standards. I strongly agree with speaker's statement, after all the just such leaders benefit public through applying his or her highest ethical and moral standards to the leadership. However, I must concede that the there is a gap between the personal standards and the public standards, that is, someone' private life maybe not seem full of ethics and morality, yet, he or she actually have a sense of mission and responsibility to his or her leader works.

In the business realm, the successful leadership always characterize that help the firm's shareholder earn more money, in other word, maximize profits. Even someone think the business leads' main obligation is increase the value of share regardless of what measure they took. However that is ill-concept replete of mistake, and result in a lot of serious social and environmental consequence. So some detractor argue that a business leader should take more responsibility such as protect the consumer's interest, preserving environment, helping enhance education, and even addressing some social problems as possible as they can. And all of such additional obligation chiefly stem from the highest ethical and moral standards. When a successful business leaders hope get more success, such personal character will help them. Because it is well known that the more large business the more rigid scrutiny form public and media, that is, they must take more responsibility for what their business caused.

On the other hand, in political realm, to maintain the highest and moral standards is necessary for that the leader appropriate exert and obtain the political power. Without such standards, we can not imagine that the political leader will carry what for us. Consider what the dictator such as Hitler and Stalin, although in different country, give human. I am force to concede that lacking highest ethical and moral standards, any leader who just depend deceiving and demagoguery to exert and obtain the political power is just a devil to public interest. In retrospect, most leaders lack of such standards always, through adopting some unethical and even illegal measures, may have the chance to short-term survival, however, from the long term such measures just become the fuse of forfeiting the his or her political leadership.

However, the mere fact is that the public standards demanded in the leadership not amount to the personal standards due to that both originate different area and take the effect in different circumstance. The personal standards always stem from the childhood experience and family education, which decide one's attitude toward one's family including one's wife, children and parents. Yet, the social experience and school education bring up the public standards. Public, of course, expect that their leaders belong both standards, that is , the highest public and personal ethical and moral standards. However, the obvious fact manifests that it hardly to fulfill in the reality. Consider, in American history, few presidents had not private flaws: the Kennedy and Bill Clinton showed little loyalty toward their wife; and Roosevelt took his relative in marriage. So the highest personal moral and ethical standards are irrelevant to the highest public standards.

In sum, in business and political realms, the highest ethical and moral standards is of vital importance for successful leadership, because such standards is tied up to how the leader to obtain success. Nevertheless, we must safely draw distinction between the personal ethical and moral standards and the public ethical and moral standards.
