TOPIC: ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."

With the roaring development of science and economy, most of us cannot escape from the experiences of being confused by so many fresh and complex things and ideas. It seems that we shouldn't spend our valuable time on looking back for the understanding of the past because they provide little guidance for living in the present, just as the speaker asserts. As for me, I concede the speaker insofar as that there is much new and complex, but it is still necessary for us to know and learn from the past.

Admittedly, we have never experienced so much new and complex in this information age. The appearance and widely use of the Internet have had us engaged in the roaring development of human civilization. Many knowledge and ideas which have never come to us are being applied such as the internet bank, online consuming and the magic use of Photoshop. It is not strange that we should pay more attention to the newly development of the digital world to keep pace with the time.

However, the explosion of the new and complex doesn't mean we should put all of our time into the present issues without studying the past, the history. Studying history is beneficial in many ways, which will help us a lot in guidance for living in the present.

To begin with, we get inspirations to success from the achievements of past luminaries. None of us without stimulations have the strong will to overcome all the obstacles in our pursuit for our dream. Learning about the great mans of the past give us such courage and inspiration. Beethoven, the great German musician, withstanding the physical and mental pains of being deaf, composed many unprecedented masterpieces of music. The story of him stimulates us to go ahead fearlessly and being strong in front of adversity. Similarly, we are encouraged to stick firmly to our goals and never give up without trying our best by Edison’s invention of bulb after thousands of unsuccessful attempts. In certain cases, achievements of luminaries might even stimulate the followers to pursue the same career.

Moreover, the past is a good teacher, from which we found the basis of success and get many experience and lessons. None of us can deny we have learned from the past, even most outstanding of us. Just as Newton claimed, “I see father because I stand on the shoulder of giants.” Most of his great works are based on the contributions of his precedents. Euclid, Galileo and Descartes such great names shouldn’t be forgotten when we talking about the Newton’s three laws of mechanics. The theory of gravity is established by the deducing of Kepler’s law of planetary motion. Besides the concrete knowledge we should inherit and develop, the history also teaches us a lot in abstract sense. We analyze the events happened in the past to know the reason why some people are on the summit of success while others fells into the abyss of failures. In the light of this, how can we arrogantly say we needn’t the guidance of the past?

Finally, history reflects the morals, values and ideals of past culture and helps us establish the view of value of our own. In the history of human civilization, every people have their sages and even such as Jesus Christ for the Westerns, the Mohammed for the Muslims, Buddha and Confucius for the East Asians. Their ideology and thoughts influence such a long history and a huge population, from which we can absorb the wisdom of living and studying. The morals and values of the past cultures will benefit us a lot by preventing us from the lost caused by the absence of beliefs.

In sum, although much new and complex has come into view, it is still necessary for us to look for guidance from the past. If we don’t know where do we come from, how can we ensure a bright perspective.
