Issue 131 “The arts (painting, music, literature, etc) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

Art, the everlasting topic, can be considered as the crystallization of human wisdom. Fundamentally, I agree with the speaker’s assertion that arts can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. However, I don’t think it is all-inclusive. There is another function that arts play-to conclude the previous mind of human beings’.

Artist, especially the one who had made great contribution to our world, always has their own idea which differed from ordinary people. They create their masterpieces to express the feeling and hope in their inner mind. Typically, these inner minds are advanced and against the current society, which sometimes means the revolution. Feudal old China had been suffered a period of Nation’s decay because of outside aggression. The weakness government and “do-not-resist” policy, which showed imagine as a goat waiting slaughtered for oversea invaders. At that time, Chinese people’s minds were filled with stupid and numb and they don’t fight for their destiny. The society was like a jail at that period of time. Finally, it was the art, or rather, the literature, which rescued old China from extinct. The famous litterateur named Lu Xun gave up his major as a doctor and turned to be a writer which Lu though was the only way to save Chinese people from spirit but not their physical illness. In 1918, Lu Xun’s first novel “Mad man’s diary” was published in the magazine “New youth” created by a group of people. From then on, his articles published like dawn twinkled up on the darkness of China. With the strongest emotion, Lu expressed the only way for exist which had already exist for years beneath the society—to overthrow the old feudal system thus to build a democratic, jural and disinterested society. Thousands of years’ policy was crashed, the art finally act as tools to reflect the hidden ideas and lead a revolution. Another good example as follows: the initial creation of new age music is to bring inner peace in our heart, which represents modern man’s desire to be quite and peaceful while their daily lives populated with bored chore. What’s more, the art can not only reveal the hidden ideas but represent and sum up the previous and present wisdom of human beings’ as well. Painting, for instance, can demonstrate what exist around us, and even perform as a micro picture of the whole society at times. The famous masterpiece named Guernica, created by famous artist Picasso, used twisted lines, with great contrast between black and white to reflect an anti-human scene of bombing the small village Guernica by Nazi German. Not to mention huge amount of operas and movies show continuing history and condense them into hours of performance.

Last but not the least, art can express author’s wishes for the pursuit of a better future. Just as Percy Shelley’s famous saying: if winter comes, can spring be far behind? Thousands of artists let their imagination sour without the limitation of present society. They give normal people the power to struggle for better lives.

To sum up, arts sometimes means the budding hope for change. The source of change is the hidden ideas and impulse in people’s mind in current society. Furthermore, art can also act as a conclusion for human wisdom and it sometimes contains the best wishes for the future.

Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging symbolic elements. People place different attitudes to the art. A majority of people consider art is the way of recreation that occurs in our life after meeting the fundamental needs, others think it is the tool to reflect the truly society. As far as I am concerned, I maintain the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, yet also have other usage.

Admittedly, arts, to great extent, reflect the truly society with their products. Arts consist of painting, music, literature and so forth. The subjects of the arts always arise from the reality society. They often vent their dissatisfaction emotion by their art works. For example, Ru xun , a famous author in China, is renowned for his critical literature. He created a host of novels that acted as a mirror to society in that era. He once was a doctor and went to Japan for his medicine. When he found it has no benefits to save his nation with his occupation, he decided to give up his doctor career and began to create the literature that would help the soul. The novel he created is to reflect the truly life condition in that time. And his novel saves innumerable soul to advocate their nation to evict the enemy. Here are another case of arts. The content of a painting also could reflect the hidden ideas and impulses in the society. If the government of a nation is the autocratic regimes that everyone in the nation should follows the requirement top leader wants. So no one would say the truth. The only way to express their truly idea is the art. They could replace every phenomenon in the society with other articles by the painting. On the one hand, it’s the way of an expression; on the other hand, he could hide his critical thinking to society in order to not be arrested by the army in the society of autocratic regimes. On the balance, the arts are the good way to express their ideas.

Arts reflect not only the hidden ideas of a society, but the distinct thinking of an individual that help them to cure the psychological barriers. The drawing plays a significant role in the counseling process. There is always a picture in the counseling office. First, a therapist shows one picture to the people who have some problem, second, people describe the picture detail and finally the therapist would has some conclusions with his problem. This is the good way to recognize the thinking of these people, also guide the direction with whole process of counseling.

Arts also act as the symbol of good taste in our life and bring lots of happiness. Photograph is prevalent in people’s life today. It is used for memorizing the good memory that has some meaningful things. There are many young parents to document their baby’s life from birth to growth. And they often read the video once again when they face the challenge or disappointed with the society. Their baby’s video gives them enough courage and hopes in the reality life .Imagine that when they getting older, and their child has grown up. How wonderful picture of all families to watch the video. It must be abound in love and appreciation. Hence, art bring the spice to the life.

In sum, arts that reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society are only the one part of life.

Last but not the least, art can express author’s wishes for the pursuit of a better future. Just as Percy Shelley’s famous saying: if winter comes, can spring be far behind? Thousands of artists let their imagination sour without the limitation of present society. They give normal people the power to struggle for better lives.

语言还有待改进，有点中文式英语的味道，开头和结尾没有什么新颖。论证还有待加强，不是很有力，例子的话上面说的比较清楚。段落发展还是最好能充实比较好的~~~

The art diverse in many forms: novels, pomes, paintings, and sculptures and so on, many of them do not just for
adornment. In this issue the author suggests that the arts can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
But personally, I maintain that the arts can do more functions than what the author has mentioned above.

There is no denying that the arts can reveal the hidden ideas and inpluse of the society. Many people who lived
under the autocratic government in the past, were more or less afraid of the punishment from the governors. When
Spain was under the reign of Nazi, most of the people in that country dare not to point out their hatred and anger
towards the Nazi army. However, the artist Picasso ignored the supervision of the governor and drew some famous
paintings to uncover the truth of the real feelings of the people in the abstract form of art. And another example
is that, when the world war two came to an end, the east Germany governed by Russia limited the content of the art
including operas, novels and paintings to an unbelievable extent that who published the anti-socialism or showed
their discontent about the governor and the policy, will be arrested by the secret police. But no one can deny
that the arts reveals people's will to reform and an impulse to change the dull situation.

It is also true that the arts can show the prevailing culture of a society. Prevailing culture which means that
the popular ideas and impulses among the society. During the Renaissance, many kinds of master pieces of art came
into our eyes. Most of which showed people's common will in that period of time: the humanistic ideas and the
personal liberation and the will to against the medieval asceticism. The long poem "Divine Comedy" written by
Dante which reflect the achievements of the medieval and the fatal disadvantage of it. The theme of his work
revealed the common trend during that period of time: the humanistic ideas.

What's more the arts can also reveal a person's inner world as well as his ideas and emotions. The art sometimes
become the object where the creators can involve  their personal feelings. Van Gogh, the well-known artist, did
not show his depression when his creations can be appreciated by most of the people; however, he portrayed a
sunflower from which the connoisseurs can draw the conclusion that he was confident about himself and did not
give up the hope just like the sunflower. Additionally, the famous musician Beethoven was unfortunately deaf when
he attempted to write the symphony; however, he finished creating the fifth symphony in which the tune reflect his
perseverance and strong will of never giving up no matter how unfairly the fate treats you.

In conclusion, the arts do not solely reveals the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. But we can judge more
useful things from it, as i mentioned above. This unique function of art can assist us to learn something more
comprehensively.

Soon after people left their active vestige in history, arts were created to cater to human's specific desire such as ritual, political or emotional needs. The mainstream arts develop with the progress of human society and play a irreplaceable in people's internal spiritual world. As far as I concerned, the profound masterpiece can reveal ideas and impulses of a society.

The initial principle of arts was to convey people's mental activity and in the later years, it continues to be the main purpose of conducting art works to some extent. Consider the ancients, they draw images of animals on the wall so as to constraint the animals' spirit on the wall. So they could be a skilled predator as they thought. The ancients expressed their personal ideas in a vague way maybe because they were not familiar with how to organize the composition with mature skills. In the later human society, the forms of art develop into many categories, for example, the painting, the sculpture, the music composition, the calligraphy, the handicrafts and so forth. No matter how dazzling these art forms may seem, they all compromise the authors’ ideas because art products cannot exist without the form of shapes, texture and content. All these elements can signify the authors’ attitude. If you listen to a concert, the tempo of drums makes you inspired, the play of piano makes you relived and the timber of cello makes you solemn. The low and slow music left pressure on you while the high and rapid music lift your spirit. As the author select a certain way to convey his idea, so you can comprehend his idea easily.

In history, it is not rare to see great artists complain the unsatisfied world in their masterpiece. They often cared about the chronic conflicts in the society and represented their thoughts to those social issues in art works. Because the social maladies were too serious to raise artists' attention, so these ideas can represent the whole nation's ideas and impulses. Think about Renaissance, the world experienced enough thought control form church and the worship of God reached a high point, so Renaissance scholars employed the humanist method in study, and searched for realism and human emotion in art. The artists thought the best way to solute these questions is to address people's self-awareness, they illustrated this idea in their work by applying the linear perspective and portraying the image of God as average people. These evolutional behaviors make the painting more realistic and the God image more amiable, people in that society began to realize their power from that point. During social and political upheavals, music can also reflect the composer's attitude. In French Revolution, volunteers were motivated by the national anthem-The Marseille to fight for their freedom, they could indentify the idea the anthem conveyed.

However, it is not always the case that arts can reveal ideas and impulses of a society. Arts are media to express the authors' ideas freely, so they don't have to concern serious social issue in their work. In modern society, there are popular arts just to entertain the crowed of audience. Cartoon, for instance, caters to children's entertaining psychology. They don't have to deal with social problems and the children can't understand these issues either. But I have to address that a great masterpiece usually combines ideas and impulses of a society with outstanding skill, only skill can hardly make a brilliant job.

From what I have discussed, I think the art work is like a mirror to the author's thought and the author's idea can usually represent the social's ideas and impulses.

Art, as part of our lives, could not only transmit permanent beauty and magnificent of nature, but also tell us something about life and society. And from my perspective, I do fundamentally agree that the arts can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. While apart from that, the arts could also be used for other purposes.

Art, to my understanding, consists of painting, music, literature, architecture, etc. And artists are the ones who devote their hearts into their works and try their best to turn them into masterpieces. Usually, the artists create their works with the inception of their ideas toward life and society, instead of merely showing the desire to please others. In some works, the artists not only describes the state of the society, but also voice the heart of the people who had no chance to express their feelings in their time. A typical example is O Henry, father of modern American short stories, who had written over 300 short stories. Most of his stories were good reflections of the lives of the poor, who were living at the bottom of society. Since he himself had been living through the miserable life, he understood well about the living environment and the ideas of the poor. A well-known story named Gift of the Magi is a good example which depicts a couple who could only make ends meet but still want to express their love to each other. The tragic end that neither of them could make use of their gifts shows us a picture of the people who are pursuing for happiness, although living a life of poverty. O Henry's works shows his care for humanity and announces to the world that all the people, no matter rich or poor, have the right to express their love.

Some other works of art inform us the common social consciousness. For instance, the architecture during the mediaeval in western countries was mostly in styles related to religion, which shows the religious worship of the people at that time. However, after the 20th century, the style of architecture is no longer uniform; instead, we could find its diversity, which implies that people are now enjoying more freedom, in other words, nothing could constrain our creativity in architecture. Besides, in some political and economical centers, we could easily find skyscrapers, which reflect the development of the hi-tech of the country and also suggest people's desire to show off their prosperity.

Yet in some works of arts, we might not find it related to the society at first glance due to the oppression by the government at that specific time. But it doesn’t mean that those works do not show the ideas and the impulses of the society. The Journey to The West, a grand long ghost novel in China written by Wu Chengen in Ming Dynasty, hints that people were living painfully owing to the governmental and the officials’ pressing on them during that period of time. Nevertheless, the writer could never expose his ideas directly under the observation of the government; what he could do was to distort the real situations into stories about ghost.

But are all the works of art bring the ideas and the forms of the society to light? My answer is, definitely, no. To my observation, some works of art only highlight the personal taste and pursuit. Take the Moonlight Sonata as an example. In this piece of music, according to one of the explanations, Beethoven expressed his depression after the failure of love with his beloved; i.e. this work of art shows nothing related to the society; instead, it only reveals Beethoven's personal feeling about life. Meanwhile, it brings the beauty of art to his audiences.

In sum, in regardless of some works of art which only express the artists' own feeling, most of the arts do reveal the ideas which otherwise could not be voiced expressively and the states of a society. While all these works show us the magnificence of art.

The mainstream arts develop with the progress of human society and play a irreplaceable in people's internal spiritual world. The initial principle of arts was to convey people's mental activity（activities） and in the later years, it continues to be the main purpose of conducting art works to some extent. Consider the ancients, they draw images of animals on the wall so as to constraint the animals' spirit on the wall. So they could be a skilled predator as they thought. The ancients expressed their personal ideas in a vague way maybe because they were not familiar with how to organize the composition with mature skills. In the later human society, the forms of art develop into many categories, for example, the painting, the sculpture, the music composition, the calligraphy, the handicrafts and so forth. No matter how dazzling these art forms may seem, they all compromise the authors’ ideas because art products cannot exist without the form of shapes, texture and content. All these elements can signify the authors’ attitude. If you listen to a concert, the tempo of drums makes you inspired, the play of piano makes you relived and the timber of cello makes you solemn. The low and slow music left pressure on you while the high and rapid music lift your spirit. As the author select（selects） a certain way to convey his idea, so(去掉) you can comprehend his idea easily.

In history, it is not rare to see great artists complain（ing） the unsatisfied world in their masterpiece（s）. They often cared about the chronic conflicts in the society and represented their thoughts to those social issues in art works. Because the social maladies were too serious to raise artists' attention, so(去掉) these ideas can represent the whole nation's ideas and impulses. Think about Renaissance, the world experienced enough thought control form（control of thoughts from） church and the worship of God reached a high point, so(好多so) Renaissance scholars employed the humanist method in study, and searched for realism and human emotion in art. The artists thought the best way to solute these questions is to address people's self-awareness, they illustrated this idea in their work by applying the linear perspective and portraying the image of God as average people. These evolutional behaviors make the painting more realistic and the God image more amiable, people in that society began to realize their power from that point. During social and political upheavals, music can also reflect the composer's attitude. In French Revolution, volunteers were motivated by the national anthem-The Marseille to fight for their freedom, they could indentify(identify) the idea the anthem conveyed.

However, it is not always the case that arts can reveal ideas and impulses of a society. Arts are media to express the authors' ideas freely, so they don't have to concern serious social issue in their work. In modern society, there are popular arts just to entertain the crowed of audience. Cartoon, for instance, caters to children's entertaining psychology. They don't have to deal with social problems and the children can't understand these issues either. But I have to address that a great masterpiece usually combines ideas and impulses of a society with outstanding skill(s), only skill can hardly make a brilliant job.

From what I have discussed, I think the art work is like a mirror to the author's thought and the author's idea can usually represent the social's ideas and impulses.

What role do arts play in a society? Many people, along with the author may believe that the arts including painting music literature, etc reveal the society’s otherwise hidden ideas and impulses. But in my view, the arts are not only a mirror of a society but also the artists’ pursuit of their ideality and true art.

Admittedly, the arts, due to people’s common sense, do sometimes bear connection with the society. Such examples are easy to seek in different areas of arts. In the realm of painting, in retrospect, there are many priceless paintings which were painted on purpose of revealing society’s . Just as the “Qingming River Seene”, which is the priceless treasure in Chinese painting history, drawn by Mr.Zhangzeduan, a famous painter in Northern Song Dynesty, passes the careful description toshow the vulgar life of the city,which has confirmedin Northern Song Dynasty and been redivivus the prosperity scene at ordinary times in Bianjing vividly. Similarly, when music is considered, it is not difficult to recognize the social momentum behind such names as The Beatles, who advocated peace, and Bob Dylon, who raised public concern of civil rights and nuclear fallout. Finally, concerning literature, the society's cry for egalitarianism was epitomized in works such as "Uncle Tom's Cabin", which is said to be an incident that touches off the war between Northern and Southern states in American. Apparently, the arts have served as the outlet of a society's emotion for a long time. They really reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

However, viewing the arts merely through its relevance to the society’s hidden ideas and impulses is too tendentious to generate their comprehensiveness. Sometimes, some art forms do not have significant relation with the society. Just take painting for example, when painters of impressionism, abstractionism, surrealism, cubism, or futurism make their strokes on a canvas to create geometric figures which represent hardly any parallels in reality, they are actually externalizing the inspiration inside themselves. One apt illustration of this point involves a story about Claude Monet, a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. He devoted himself to the colour pursuit of impressionist painting art all his life. There is nothing between the eye of the painter reading the color and the canvas receiving the equivalent of this color - neither plan nor idea, nor a real society. From him we witness a new method of creating art - art that greatly expresses the mindset of a person through colour. Can anyone see any social bearings in his drawings such as “Impression, sunrise”? Or do these drawings intend to reflect such bearings? I think the impressionist paintings are more of a pursuit for new painting art than a social outgrowth.

In sum, it’s true that to some extent, the art can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. But when the arts are considered as a whole, this is usually not the case. The fact that some arts are not related to the society let alone reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society virtually demonstrates their inborn independence from the mundane world. After all, arts are created by and directly linked to artists, who may take then just as his own enjoyment and a mental chase for the true art. It’s possible that for them, connecting arts with the temporal world is a kind of blasphemy for art.

Usually, the artists create their works with the inception of their ideas toward life and society, instead of merely showing the desire to please others. In some works, the artists not only describes the state of the society, but also voice the heart of the people who had no chance to express their feelings in their time. A typical example is O Henry, father of modern American short stories, who had written over 300 short stories. Most of his stories were good reflections of the lives of the poor, who were living at the bottom of society. Since he himself had been living through the miserable life, he understood well about the living environment and the ideas of the poor. A well-known story named Gift of the Magi is a good example which depicts a couple who could only make ends meet but still want to express their love to each other. The tragic end that neither of them could make use of their gifts shows us a picture of the people who are pursuing for happiness, although living a life of poverty. Yet in some works of arts, we might not find it related to the society at first glance due to the oppression by the government at that specific time. But it doesn’t mean that those works do not show the ideas and the impulses of the society. The Journey to The West, a grand long ghost novel in China written by Wu Chengen in Ming Dynasty, hints that people were living painfully owing to the governmental and the officials’ pressing on them during that period of time. Nevertheless, the writer could never expose his ideas directly under the observation of the government; what he could do was to distort the real situations into stories about ghost.

But are all the works of art bring the ideas and the forms of the society to light? In this piece of music, according to one of the explanations, Beethoven expressed his depression after the failure of love with his beloved; i.e. this work of art shows nothing related to the society; instead, it only reveals Beethoven's personal feeling about life. Meanwhile, it brings the beauty of art to his audiences.

In sum, in regardless of some works of art which only express the artists' own feeling, most of the arts do reveal the ideas which otherwise could not be voiced expressively and the states of a society. While all these works show us the magnificence of art.
