Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system.
I agree with the author’s claim that many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system because laws cannot change what is in people’s hearts or minds. Well-intended as the legal system is with instructions and punishments, it cannot solve some special aspects of our society for it is difficult to define everything that deserves punishment and it may also bring side effects.
From one aspect, legal system cannot solve the disharmony among people. We know the main purpose of laws is to regulate people’s behavior in order for the society to function well. Laws only deal with fierce disputes which bring great loss or harm to people. However, if things do not influence the regular lives of its citizens seriously, laws do not inference with them. For example, if a person has a quarrel with his neighbor, laws do not act for it is both inconvenient and unnecessary to punish someone when there are so many other big issues to settle in the whole country. Imagine you do not like a person for he or she haggles over every ounce and or is fond of making fun of others, can you turn to the laws to punish him?
From another aspect, different regions have different cultures, which makes it difficult for laws to determine right or wrong for people with different beliefs. Once an American president visited Thailand and greeted the queen with a hug, while it was forbidden to hug the queen there although the president intended to show politeness and passion. If we encounter situations like that, can laws appropriately solve the problems?
In addition, there are so many countries around the world and the criterions of crimes are dissimilar. It is likely that someone commits a crime in other countries while that is reasonable in his own country. We do have a universal legal system till now, which blocks the normal functions when there are international disputes.
In summary, present legal system has some deficiencies that make many problems cannot be solved properly and there are some aspects that are unrealistic to deal with such as religion issues. We must combine laws, morality and cultures together to live in a more harmonious society.
