34“ Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
The vice president of human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company ’ s president.
“ In an effort to improve our employees ’ productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees ’ Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees ’ Internet use
on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits. ”

In the argument, the speaker concludes that the company will prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic and improve the overall profit with the help of electronic monitoring software. To justify the claim, the author cites the fact that if they want to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal activities, employees need to be identified and punished. At first glance, the conclusion seems quite reasonable, but after close scrutiny of the arguer’s reasoning process, several fatal defects can be revealed with great ease.
To begin with, the threshold problem with this argument is that the writer attempts to establish a causal relationship between the number of work hours spent on personal activities and the employee’s productivity. However, the arguer fails to provide sufficient evidence to support the assumption upon which the argument depends. As a matter of fact, there are many other factors such as skill, intellect and attitude towards work. Even if productivity are mostly caused by the work hours, there is no evidence showing that the work need a large amount of working hours. Until the author rules out these possible factors, it is unfounded to reach the conclusion involved in the argument.
Furthermore, another problem that weakens the logical of this argument is that only some employees use Internet not everyone. It is possible that the employees who use Internet only stand for a tiny proportion of the whole company. Thus, for example, buying advanced machine and improve the management level rather than installing software will contribute to the productivity.
The last but not the least important, the speaker’s another assumption that electronic monitoring will improve the overall profits is still unwarranted, because no compelling evidence is provided to affirm this assumption. It is much possible that the cost of the monitoring software is so high that it cannot bring so much benefits. Another possibility is that the revenue and cost have exceeds the profits it bring. In short, without better evidence ruling out these and other alternative explanation, it is reasonable to cast considerable doubt on this assumption.
In sum, the author fails to provide a logical process of reasoning so as to make the statement unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen the argument, the writer should provide more information to show that the monitoring soft will bring the overall profits.
