Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress.

Throughout human history, one can see that many of the discoveries or progresses were achieved after a chain of mistakes. Therefore some people tend to assert that only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress. While I admit that mistakes played an important role in making discovery or progress, however to say that discovery or progress can only be achieved through making mistakes is misleading.

Mistakes in themselves can not contribute to the discovery or progress, only when people try to learn from mistakes can they help to bring about discovery or progress. Without learning from mistakes, one would probably still make the same mistakes in the future. At this point, mistakes have no use for this kind of person to achieve progress, or even hamper their ability to make discovery or progress since they might be discouraged through making numerous mistakes without any success. It is hard to imagine that Edison could eventually invent light bulb if he had not taken delight in learning from every mistakes he made. Just as he had once said, "Every time I fail, I found a new way that can not make a bulb, and I step further in approaching the idea material for the bulb." Therefore only when people treat mistakes with the right attitude can mistakes help to bring about discovery or progress.

However, one does not need to firstly commit some mistakes in order to bring about discovery and progress. Mistakes only serve as the experience in the expedition toward the achievement of discovery or progress; they lead us to the right track when we are deviated from the main pass. If we have formed a clear goal at the beginning and frequently examine whether we are on the right track, then most of the mistakes could be avoided. What is more, we can learn from others or our predecessors who have left a large amount of precious experience to us. One who can make discoveries or progresses is one who can make the best of the experience of others and try to make as fewer mistakes as possible. Newton once said, “If I have seen farther, it is because I am standing on the shoulder of a giant.” From this we can see Newton can make best use of the experience from others which helped him avoid many mistakes that has been made by others, and finally led to his success. Moreover, some of the mistakes are caused by ignorant or reckless deed, which could be avoided if one has been better informed or more careful. This kind of mistakes can not become the excuses for their failures.

Furthermore, if any discovery and progress is achieved through making mistakes, then the human history as well as the society would progress slowly. Sometimes the cost of the mistakes could be so high that they greatly slow down or even inhibit the progress. For example, the Three Mile Island disaster which was caused by a faulty valve and careless operation had inhibited the development of nuclear energy significantly. This mistake could be well avoided if more caution had been paid to it.

In all, we should make as fewer mistakes as possible and be prepared to learn from mistakes. Only through this can we make discovery or progress more effectively.
