TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
WORDS: 616 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-3-4 8:49:26
提纲:
3. 如果将好社会定义为和谐的话,我们正在这么做:比如国际间的合作;对社会弱势的关注和照顾;对各种人的包容,尊重人权;
The author’s statement is actually a dual claim. First of all we should identify the complexity of this issue. What makes for a better society? What does the speaker means by a “better” society and whether we have learned how to achieve it?
Consider first the speaker’s assertion that the destiny of society depends on how children are socialized. I strongly agree with it. In school, children learn knowledge and skills for their future life, healthy interaction with peers, communication, cooperation, and how to assert themselves in a respectful manner. Education in school helps children distinguish between right and wrong, good and bad, and grow up to be good citizens. It is the accumulation of such qualified members of society that forms a better society.
However, socialization is only one factor influencing the destiny of society. Many other factors should be considered such as adult influence, personal conviction, the mass media, and so on. Consider certain distinguished persons who have contributed profoundly to a better society. Mao Zedong’s contributions sprang primarily from his personal conviction for a better society, in spite of lack of education in school. Another telling example comes from my experiences as a volunteer. Many years ago, I visited a class at Fuxing Elementary school in Beijing, and asked the students, “Is this a good school?” They answered, “Yes, this is a good school.” I asked them, “Why?” Among these students, one nine-year-old said, “The principal Wang makes good rules and everybody obeys them.” So I said, “Give me an example.” And another answered, “You can’t climb on the pipes in the bathroom. We don’t climb on the pipes and the principal doesn’t either.” This example aptly illustrates the importance of adult influence for children, which educators should pay more attention to. You cannot expect children to take messages about rules or morality seriously unless they see adults taking those rules seriously in their day-to-day affairs.
Consider next the speaker’s claim that we have not yet learned how to raise children who can better society. If we define a “better” society as one characterized by greater cooperation across cultural and national boundaries, greater respect for human rights, greaterproportion and harmony, in accordance with their principle of moderation, that is, nothing too much or too little, then we and our offspring are enjoying and meanwhile creating a better one. Many organizations and groups of volunteers are established to support and provide appropriate and timely protection for pregnant women, children, physically and mentally challenged persons, and frail elderly persons who live alone and lack a primary person responsible for their care. The creation of shelters and temporary refuges, which is planed to planned to protect people and satisfy their special needs and avoid exposing them to suffering further physical and emotional harm, also benefits everybody and eventually contributes to a better society. For the purpose of safeguarding the lives and wellbeing of members of society, and protecting our natural environment, our government enacts many laws and regulations. In face of these activities, our children would feel filled with an aura of love and realize what a good society they live. In short, the arguer’s second claim flies in the face of what we have seen today.
To sum up, some people may still remain unconvinced due to their different experiences and conflicting values. However, the analysis and relevant examples above would at least make them aware of the complexity of the issue under discussion. This might be the first step, and even major step out of the dilemma, which help more and more people come to realize that we have learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.
