Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for student to study history and literature than it is for them to study science and mathematics. Use specific reasons and example to support your opinion.
Currently the controversial issue whether studying history and literature is more important than studying science and mathatics or not urge great attention from both public and idividuals. As far as I am concerned, history and literature are of greater significance for students.
To begin with, history can make people wise. Firstly, by knowing some famous events can help avoid some potential events or tendency that might negatively influence the society. Secondly, people should remember some history, since it influence and benefit people so much. Franklin Roosevelt, for instance, save America from a severe economic crisis in 1930s: the Great Depression. He created the New Deal to provide relief to the unemployed, and to the banks which were nearly facing bankrupt. Because Roosevelt's successul measures, he is honored by all the American people. In terms of the two points above, learning history is vital for people.
Additionally, literature enable students to develop personality positively. Have you ever hold a novel and just do not want to leave it for a lunch until your mother shout loudly to you? You must have the same experience. When I was 17, I read The Old Person And The Sea, written by Haminway, and it is so fasinating when it describes the scenerio that the old man fight against the shark alone in the skiff, on the rough sea for eighty-four hard days. And from the novel, I learned strenth, courage and bravery. So students can shape their strong personality by studying literature.
On the other hand, merely concentrating on the academic performance such as science and mathematics, without a probaly emotional communication to others, one could never get high achievement. And even much worse, this kind of students might tend to be related with the campus violence incidents, which should be paid highly attention of governments and educators. Only combining with studying history or literature, this situation can be relived. Thus, it is necessary for students to study history and literature.
In sum, from the points I mentioned, it is both essential and necessary to study history and literature. Consequently, after weighing cons and pros, I hold the idea that studying history and literature is more important than studying scicence for students. |
