The plausible argument quotes a report makes a conclusion that the editor’s statement is false which wants to state the fact that unemployed persons at the financial crisis can not find a new job in a long time. However, this argument based on the report cited by the arguer which contradicts the editor’s statement should be evaluated more effectively.
To begin with, it is possible that more jobs have been created in the society from 1992 until recently. However, the current financial crisis has expedited the disappearance of the jobs. Generally speaking, the number of former is more than the latter is since 1992, so the unemployed people cannot benefit from this fact at the moment. Even if the situation of the increase of new position is still happening, this can not guarantee that they can satisfy the desire of the people without jobs, for the simple reason that there are numerous newcomers to compete with them.
Moreover, the validity of the cited report is doubtful. From the article we find little evident to convince the readers, thus casting doubt on whether the respondents are representative of the overall situation of the nation is unreasonable, because it points out neither concrete number nor constructive evidence to support the statement. Even if the report is selected form authoritative bodies, when used to a particular group, the sample should be close enough to support the generation. Since it has passed a long time since 1992, the economic realm, which is changing rapidly, calls for efficiency. Even so, the term “so many” is too vague to be statistically.
Lacking the information about the number of surveyed workers and the number of the respondents, it is impossible to assess the validity of the survey.
In addition, although there exist some correlations between the fact that the newly created jobs which are all fulltime tend to pay above-average wages and the reality that the unemployed persons can not find new positions, this can not imply all these new jobs can be acquired by the unemployed persons. Even if these people have raised salaries, higher social status, the majority of the human beings in the society is still struggling against poverty. There might also be some possibilities that there are some technical limitations and the restriction of age to this kind of person, which may also hamper their process of finding new jobs.
After careful consideration, the author lacks both detailed evidences as well as precise reasoning to make a sound argument. According to his own theory, in order to make a logical argument,
the author should cite a more recent report including a big enough sample to clarify the situation of the unemployed person. On the other hand, the arguer cites a doubtful number to validate his theory, which may not convince the readers. In my opinion, he should give us other strong evidence to support his conclusion. |
