221."The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."
History profits us in many respects. One of
the most important benefit of the study of history is to learn the common characters between the current people and the ancestors. Yet, as it concerns to me, another benefit that history tells us where is the differences between the modern generation and the past ones is as important as the former.
Of course, to acknowledge that there are a lot of common sense we inherited from our forefathers is one of primary benefits of history study, for it enable us to find from past lessons, which can be harness as compass in the treatment of the current problems. Seeking in the history, we will find that although the modern technology make a extraordinarily progress, however, the biological constructions of modern human do not improved as dramatically as technology does. We still need to eating, to sleeping and to slaking as our forefathers. We are troubled with illness, senescence, and death. Nor great advances in emotion do we achieve: We need love, safe and respects from our fellows as ancients do. We will suffer from fear, hatred and anguish.Without study history, how can we know that the sorrow that is bothering our youth once had troubled the Youth Whether? Besides, since these demands exists and these troubles stays, human society still has to own these fundamental functions: to provide its member enough food to relief their starve, to offer care to those ill, to burial those has gone, to guard their individual safes, to protect their health, to respect their primary dignity, to relief the agony, to conciliate the sorrow and est.. If a society malfunctioned in these aspects, then would break out the problems, such as famine, impoverishment, suicides, violence, murders, deprave, epidemics breakings-out, and even wars. Acquaintance with these, we come to the view that part of the reasons for the social problems that we have faced today would be similar with those once caused similar problems. Then, we can scrutiny at the past to find out what lessons we could learn from the previous affairs, and what we should do or not to circumvents the detours once our ancestors had taken on.
On the contrary, the history study would profit the current in a parallel way to equip our mind with the differences between every era: it alerts us the truth that it is illusory to wish the congruent strategy once worked in the past performs as effective as it used to. Comparing the present and the past, we will find the environment which we live in has alters dramatically, the tempo of the life accelerated, and the views of people extended. Even a case was caused by the same reason that gave birth to the previous one; however, its result would probably develop differently. And we will pay for our ignorance on these differences. Napoleon overlooked the fact that his generals had changed; as a return, he lost the Waterloo Campaign with the same martial strategy and came to the end of his political career. And if we ignored the distinctions between the risk we are facing today and the recession we encountered in 1930s, and just copied Roosevelt’s' new policy, no one can promise it would succeed to draw American economic our of the bog as it used to. Only when we catch the light that the world has changed, can we adapt the previous polices to meet the current conditions.
Surely, the function of history does not limited in these two respects, it also works in other ways, such as to fit our curiosity upon where we come from, how we lived in the past and what has happened in the history. In a short, we learn the past due to our inner inquiries.
In sum, as Francis Bacon once stated : history makes man wise. It plays a role as a mirror to the people in the modern era. It tells us which performances are appropriate and which are not via enlightening us the same between different generations. It also warning us taking care of the changes by instructing us the varieties have taken place as time flies. |
