In this memorandum the publisher of the newsmagazine asserts that by displaying less international news stories on the front covers and attaching less importance on the international news could make profits again to the newsmagazine. To support the assertion the publisher points out that the magazines which have international news on their front covers were the poorest-selling over the past three years, and their competing magazines cut down the number of international news on cover stories in the same time, with the growth of cost to report international news. The argument seems logical but not thoroughly well-reasoned.

First of all, the publisher of newsbeat is falling to consider other possible alternatives to poorest-selling magazines after the international news on the front covers. The generally special covers can not proof anything. Such alternatives may include the fact that there are no professionals available in newsbeat who can explore international news which are of great value
or who are capable of writing comment articles which are unique and insightful as well as who are able to design covers which can catch people’s eyes immediately. On condition that by recommending a professional the international news and the covers can be attractive to the public. In addition, the publisher has failed to consider the process of sales and marketing of the magazines. Perhaps they determined wrong distribution channels such as in the
residential area full of the elderly or kids, or in the suburbs of the city. All these above result in poor selling. It appears reasonable, therefore, for the publisher to focus on these kind of spots than to reduce the number of front covers in international news stories. The lack of personnel and mistaken marketing strategy are more likely to occur the poor selling.

A three-year period can not proof anything because there can be a large amount of other possibilities affected to determine the poor selling in the past three years. This may have been a period, such as the age of peace, when there were seldom significant events taking place in the international environment and therefore international news of great value decreased in magazines. However, it’s extraordinarily possible that international news which have large impact will come about next. Again, in this period, another new media, such as TV or internet, was popular and even dominant in society, which magazine was out of fashion temporarily. But the good selling will be back as soon as magazine becomes a popular media again.

It is mentioned in the argument that competing news-magazines abated the cover stories in international news in the same period, which is insufficient to support in the conclusion drawn from it. The publisher presents the behavior without explaining the reason of it. Unless it can be shown that it is because competing news-magazines can manifest that the international news is the key reason of poor-selling that they cut down the international news covers validly, the conclusion is unwarranted. In fact, in face of such limited evidence, it is fallacious to draw any conclusion at all.

Overall, the reasoning behind decreasing the number of international news in the magazine seems logical as presented above since the publisher are acting their own profits. However, before any decision are made about the reduction of international news, the publisher and the editors should evaluate all possible alternatives and causes for the poor-selling of magazines over the past three period.
