The following is a memorandum issued by the publisher of news magazine, Newsbeat, in the country of Dinn.
“Our poorest-selling magazine issues over the past three years were those that featured international news stories on their front covers. Over the same period, competing news-magazine have significantly decreased the number of cover stories that they devote to international news. Moreover, the cost of maintaining our foreign bureaus to report on international news is increasing. Therefore, we should decrease our emphasis on international news and refrain from displaying such stories on our magazine covers”
In this argument, the arguer claims that in order to make more profits, we should decrease our emphasis on international news and refrain from such news stories on the front of magazine covers. To substantiate the claim, the arguer points out that the poorest-selling magazines are those that featured international news stories on the covers along with the act of the competing news-magazine, moreover, the increasing cost of the maintaining foreign bureaus to report on international news. Close scrutiny of these facts, however, reveals this argument is unconvincing in several respects.
First and foremost, the arguer assumes that the international news stories on the front cover of the magazines lead to magazine’s poor sales. Although this assumption might be possible, the arguer did not provide any further explanations to it. Thus we may certainly believe that the poor sales have something to do with other possible reasons, such us the blend international affairs, the economic depression, unappealing content of the magazines, the promising competitors of the magazine publisher and so on. Without ruling out such possibilities, the arguer’s claim is logically flawed.
Secondly, the arguer shows us a fact that competing news-magazine have decreased the number of international news stories on the cover sharply. Nevertheless, this is no guarantee that the international news on cover result in the poor sales of the magazine sales. It is quite possible that some companies offer them an attempting price to publish their advertisements on the cover of the magazine. Besides, the argument did not provide any information concerning what happens since the competitors reduced the international news on covers. It is entirely possible that these competitors did not make more profits at all and this action turned out to be a failure. The author just unreasonably makes a hasty conclusion without take a second look and thinks carelessly for the real reason.
Thirdly, the arguer refers to the increasing cost of the maintaining foreign bureaus to report on international news. Admittedly, increase of the costs may affect the profits, however, we could not make an assertion merely on this. What’s more, there maybe other reasons like the inflation of money, so that we could buy the same thing with more money now. Perhaps the international news are well worth the money which are spent on them since readers may be more and more concerned with the events outside the nation in recent years. Consider these possible facts, this argument itself lacks certain persuasive support.
In sum, the arguer’s argument is not persuasive. To bolster it, the arguer should reason more convincingly, cite more substantiated evidence, and take every possibility into consideration.
