To: All Employees

Effective October 15, 2013, the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) announced a strike date of Tuesday, October 22. Today, October 16, 2013, the University of Manitoba and UMFA have begun conciliation sessions in an effort to resolve the negotiation impasse and reach an agreement. These conciliation sessions are planned to continue through Sunday, October  20. We  remain hopeful that conciliation can lead to a positive resolution but recognize that with a strike date set our staff and larger community have many questions.

We have prepared the following communication to address commonly asked questions in advance of a possible strike.

Will the University continue to operate in the event of an UMFA strike?
YES, the University will continue with normal operations to the extent possible. We will support the continuation of classes and services in the event of UMFA strike action.

Will all academic staff be on strike?
NO, only those individuals who are members of UMFA will be on strike.  Many academic staff are not members of UMFA, including sessional appointees, teaching assistants and certain members of the Faculty of Medicine.  These individuals will continue with academic duties.  All administrative, support, and managerial staff will report to work as usual.

Are non-UMFA staff expected to work during an UMFA strike?
YES, members of other unions have collective agreements in force, and therefore all non-UMFA staff are expected to report to work.

What happens if non-UMFA staff  cross the picket lines?
You have every right to cross the picket lines to attend work or to access any university service you wish.  Please exercise patience and caution in crossing picket lines.  All parties, including employees on strike and individuals crossing picket lines, are responsible for refraining from illegal behaviour.  If you experience problems or are involved in an incident while crossing the picket line please report this to University Security Services  (204-474-9312).

Where will the picket lines be?
It is not known at this time where picket lines will be.  The university will share updates regarding picket line locations as it becomes available through social media channels and on umanitoba.ca/strikeinfo.

If students have questions about their courses, midterms, financial aid, etc, what should I tell them?
Please direct all student inquiries to umanitoba.ca/strikeinfo.
