Most advertisement make products seem much better than they really are

  I agree with the statement that most advertisements make products seem much better than they really are. To strengthen my argument, I have several reasons to name.
  
  To begin with, maybe it's a natural trend for companies to make the advertisement as attractive as possible, due to the fierce competition in the market. Suppose that two companies provide similar products, which is quite common in modern society, and they all wants to have a larger share of the market and gain more profit. So what are their strategies? Make an extraordinary advertisement! Since the difference between their products is negligible, both of them have to earn an edge by means of advertisement. Thus two companies will spend a lot of budget on advertising, so the advertisement will appear fascinating. Chances are that they are much better than the products really are.

  Furthermore,  the behavior of consumers will also contribute to the not so realistic style of advertisement. A typical consumer will find it very hard to decide which one to buy in a supermarket with overwhelming  similar products. In this situation, he will probably choose the one which is most impressive. Then how can a product leaves an unerasable impression on the consumer? Only advertisement! It doesn't necessarily need to be honest to the truth, but the more impressive, the better. So an ordinary product will appear extraordinary with the accompanies of superstars and some cool stuff, and it seems much better on the screen than in real life.

  However, previous discussions doesn't lead to the conclusion that the advertisements can be made with no regards to the real product. After all the products themselves are the reason why the consumers spend their salary, and the advertisements are just a mean by which companies can sell more products. Thus the major concern of a company should be to make better products, not mere an impressive advertisement. Otherwise the company will lose its share of the market if the consumers are disappointed by the quality of its products.

  In conclusion, most advertisements actually make products seem much better than they really are due to the contributions both from companies and  consumers, but at the mean time they should be rooted in reality to enjoy a long-term success.

As far as I am concerned, I disagree with the statement that people learn more from watching TV than from reading books. And I have several reasons to back up my argument.

To begin with, we have to have consensus on what we are referring to when we discuss 'learning'. Of course television and books are two important means where people can learn something.  However, what we learn for TV is information rather than knowledge- we just know some facts, that's not really learning. By 'learning' I means that we know the reason beyond the facts, in another word, knowledge.

Thus reading books is certainly a promising way of learning. It encourage people to think deeper, to see things behind the words and phrases, which is an essential part of learning. Books are always abstract without pictures or sound, so readers have to use their imagination to visualize what idea the author is trying to convey. By this way, readers have to focus on the material and concentrate on the story, which is not required on watching TV. When watching TV, people tend to take it as a mean of entertainment. They will just receive the information passively without a second thought, and have fun. On the contrary, reading books calls for active participation. Readers have to think for themselves to grasp the outline of a book.


Furthermore, books cover a large range of subjects, which is unable to be presented on screen. For example, the beauty of Homer's Odyssey can be only appreciated by reading the epic rather than watching a movie on the same topic. Although TV provides richer watching experience in terms of multimedia, it's always too shallow on dealing with deep emptions. These emotions can only be felt by reading the original text. What's more, the highest pursuit in academic world, philosophy, cannot be obtained through TV neither. Critical thinking and a lot of time are needed to master this subject, which is only possible when a person carefully read a philosophical book himself.

In sum, even though TV is very important for modern people to gain information, reading books is still superior in terms of learning.
