Jeffrey Anderson is an architectural designer and researcher. He has worked with renowned architects, theorists, and designers including Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Jimenez Lai, Jeffrey Kipnis, and Cesar Pelli.He holds a Master of Architecture II from Princeton University, and both a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture with Honors and Distinction from the Knowlton School of Architecture at Ohio State University.

1. What made you choose to pursue another post-professional degree at Princeton University after graduating from Ohio State University? What did you learn from these two schools?
When I agreed to go to graduate school at Ohio State, I did so with the expectation that I would later pursue an M.Arch II at another school. The reason for this was that I wanted to expand my education beyond a single school and a single pedagogical model. The opportunity to go to Princeton allowed me to expand my academic and professional network significantly, not only with professors, but also with very interesting fellow classmates from diverse backgrounds. I often say that I got my education at Ohio State and I went to Princeton to meet people.

8. Last but not least, maybe it is a little bit general. What are your thoughts about the architecture field? Or let's say, what does architecture mean to you?
Architecture has taken on a lot of meanings for me over the years. One of the reasons I have taken so many mentors is that I did not want to become embedded too deeply into any single architectural paradigm. In general, I believe that architecture is about turning the world into yourself -- you design what you want to see in a way that is a manifestation of your own education, values, etc. In terms of the architectural field, I think the discipline is in a tricky position right now. It seems that "design" is increasingly devalued in society: you see architecture offices submitting dozens of options to clients rather than making deisgn decisions; thousands of architects working for free on international competitions which end up not being built; and an abundance of architectural theory with no quantitative value structure. I'm not sure exactly where architecture will go in the imminent future, but it seems that its agency increasingly becomes manifest in the form of the detail and the building envelope. These become literal embodiments of society's formal and environmental regulations and value structures and I think this is something that architects should pay close attention to in the coming years.
