“Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now
become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a
result, tourism will soon become obsolete.”(Issue 33)
My answer:
There is much worry that the appearance and prevalence of television and
computer connections will make some traditional vocations, such as publicati
on, tourism, shrink. As far as I am concerned, television and Internet will
not replace these vocations, especially the vocations that we experience not
only by eye, which tourism is a typical example of. However, if we can make
good use of these media to publicize the traditional vocations, they will f
lourish.
Admittedly, as a kind of media, television and Internet generate great ch
anges in our life because of their convenience. Through television, we can a
ppreciate many cheerful programs and know about the up-to-the-minute news bu
lletin. Through Internet, we can get almost all kinds of information, do sho
pping only by pointing a button on mouse and chat with strangers from a coun
try where we have not been, etc. So we often say that the Earth is becoming
smaller and smaller. All people living on the Earth are neighbors of the sam
e village. Television and Internet have been an important and indivisible pa
rt of our everyday life.
But television and Internet are only media and they will not make tourism
obsolete. Maybe because Internet has become the fashion of our times, people
exaggerate its use. When analyzing whether television and Internet will mak
e tourism obsolete, we can/should look into the reason why people go on a tr
ip. Firstly, people travel for relaxation. In modern life, People suffer fro
m heavy burden and pressure. As a result, it is very important for people to
relax themselves. Then if we let a person who has been working inside room
for five days or more to select the style to spend his weekend, is he please
d to visit a beautiful place by television and Internet or by his own? I thi
nk most people will select the later, especially those who must face the scr
een all day and all night such as myself. I think travel on Internet is bori
ng and not a good style to relax myself. Tourism is interesting because we e
xperience not only by eye but also by nose, ear, arm, foot, heart, even the
spirit; Secondly, people travel as their hobbies and for the increase of the
ir knowledge. For example, a person is very interested in the Statue of Libe
rty in New York city and wants to see and touch the actual object. Will he/s
he be satisfied with only a few pictures and words on television or Internet
? Another example, if one’s travelling destination is to take some beautifu
l photos of landscape, which is very common among tourists, he cannot realiz
e his wishes and enjoy himself at all only by television and Internet.
However, if people can make good use of television and Internet as an effi
cient tool to publicize the places of interest, tourism will not obsolete bu
t on the contrary benefit from television and Internet and then become more
famous.
In conclusion, tourism will not become obsolete because of the rise of tel
evision and Internet for their limitation to one’s sense. But as effective
media tools, television and Internet can be used to advertise their business
for people of tourism and get more information conveniently for people who
wish to travel. I believe these traditional vocations will benefit from the
advertisement of television and Internet and become more and more developed
and mature.
