issue50-
In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach.

Should faculty of college and university be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach so as to improve the quality of instruction? In response to this issue, we need to analyze the proposition comprehensively and systematically. To some extend, I agree with the speaker's general assertion that quality of instruction can be improved if faculty work in professions relevant to the subject they teach. However, the speaker oversimplifies this issue and an all-sided consideration is needed to improve the quality of instruction at a university level.

First and foremost, there's no denying the fact that practical working experience in relevant fields can contribute to the raise of instruction quality. On the one hand, faculty who is actively engaged in their fields comes to class with fresh insights and contagious excitement about the issue at hand. Typical case in this point is the commercial college in which working experiences are indispensable for professors. Only through genuine business activities can they be equipped with the detailed knowledge, acute sensibility to the change of market, as well as the clear and distinct understanding of consumers' needs. On the other hand, by keeping abreast with the changing demands of work as a professional, professors can spark the interests of students. Moreover, given enough information about a certain profession, students are motivated to consider pursuing a career in that field to make more informed career decisions.

Despite the merits given above demonstrates that working outside academic world can benefit the quality of instruction and the development of students, I tend to disagree, however, with the statement that faculty are required to work in professions related to the course they teach. We do not have to go very far to find counterexamples. When it comes to theoretical subjects such as philosophy and mathematics, it is hard to find a particular profession outside the academic field that is closely related to their course instruction. In other words, not all the instruction can be linked with certain practical profession which means that it is infeasible to require all faculty to work outside campus.

Finally, and perhaps more importantly, the speaker seems to fail to take into account the fact that over-emphasis on the career achievement may leads to more cons than pros. Consider the situation in which a professor of computer science, committed to develop an advance searching engine for Yahoo, but sacrifices the time to prepare for the course of next week. Too much work outside campus, which sometimes is hard to control by professors themselves, can distract faculty from concentrate on teaching, communicating with students, and may even interrupt their academic research progress. Further more, when much attention is put on the career world, theoretical study will therefore be affected and students tend to pay attention only to the information useful in pursuing their ideal career instead of trying to enhance their knowledge structure.

From the analysis made above, I commit to the optimal approach that faculty in college and universities need to seek a balance and take an all-sided consideration in order to raise the quality of instruction when taking relevant jobs outside academic world. And the decision should be determined on a case-by-case analysis. Meanwhile, there are many other means by which quality of instruction can be improved. For professors, in order to strengthen their academic accomplishment they can communicate about latest researches and exchange newest information by seminars or make full use of the platform of specialize newspapers or magazines like <Natural science>. As to students, with the development of the technology today they can get information on the internet and summer or winter internship is also an efficient way to gain vivid career experience.
