Issue50: In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
From a philosophical point of view, experiment is the solo criterion for testing truth. So, in terms of this point, I strongly agree with the statement that the entire faculty should working outside to acquire experience relevant to the subjects they research. Whether a teacher or a student must have benefited from this requirement, so on both perspectives, it is very important to provide the opportunities to all faculty to working outside the academic world.
To begin with, as the rapid pace of society and technology change in our world, knowledge updates have been accelerated. The books content and classroom information often lag current developments; therefore it is very important for teachers to get experiences outside of academic theory to compensate for the backwardness of their teaching knowledge. So, in this respect, as I see it, there are two benefits from this.
On the one hand, for all faculties, practical working experience in the non-academic filed relevant to their professions will improve the faculty’s understanding of the courses they teach. Teachers who are inexperience in the academic theory impart nothing but text book knowledge to their students. Moreover, the quality of their teaching level would hesitated to move forward, they just like a repeating machine to repeat their text book quotidian in classroom. On the other hand, the academic research their own would be into a mass of stagnant water. They can not find anything new to improve their current condition. So, spending time working outside the academic world would bring new blood and inspiration to their profession and advanced technology and equipment will help them to do research more efficient.
Similarly, for students, a teacher with more experience of outside will help them to understand the text book more deeply. By bring practical experiences the teacher would make the courses they teach more vivid and understandable. Moreover, a great amount of new technologies and facilities will be introduced to the class in that domain of research. Then students find out more information about the real life relevant to that filed and though this way more knowledge will be accumulated for them to adapt their future research or job market. In addition, if teacher just impart their students with text book or knowledge lag current developments, students’ interest will be suppressed, or even make them hate to study. Aside from this, students will feel very confused about their future occupation when they find that know nothing but text book knowledge. So, this is why there are so many people question the purpose of our current education.
In conclusion, aside from acquire knowledge from the academic theory they research, all the faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions which would improve the quality of instruction level. Moreover, both teachers and students will benefit from this requirement. |
