Goverment funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts.

Should government sponsor film, painting, music, etc? Are the integrity of the arts threatened by the government funding? This is really a hotly-debated issue that calls for comprehensive consideration and cost and benefit analysis. Generally, government funding of arts will unevitably influence the creativity and diversity of art, which may threanten the integrity of the arts. But total rejection of government funding may be disadvantageous to the survival and prosper of some arts.

To begin with, the government involvement will unavoidably direct work of art toward certain directions since artists would respond to the government funding by shifting focus to the areas that please funding bodies. This direction of arts will further exert negative impact on the diversity of arts. The funding of government act as a sifter which encourages the arts that live up to the expection of government and discourages the arts which authorities consider unworthy. Thus the arts that do not earn the government funding have to face the intense competition against those arts with strong fund support. This is unfair, and this will threaten the survival of certain kinds of arts, leading to the degration of art diversity. For example, if government always support novels that reflect contemporary modern life, writers and editors would show great passion toward creating such kind of work, leaving other sort of literature such as romantic poem, historial documentation and scientific fiction behind. It should be noted that the value of art cannot be decided by government. Artists have the right to freely conduct creativite activity, and people also have the right to choose what they consider valuable. The arbitrary selection of certain kinds of art is a threat to the integrity of the arts.

In addition, public funding of arts will displace certain amount of private investment, which should be the main resouces for arts funding. The increasing amount of government fund in arts, if not properly regulated and superintended, may cause political manipulation over the arts. Through the control of funds, authorities in government may use arts as means to achieve their political goals or economic interests, which greatly hazarded the purity and integrity of arts. For example, if a film is full funding by government, the content of the film may be greatly influenced by govenment’s decision, even submit to the intention of government. Some political figures may take advantage of film to propaganda their political position, influence public opinion and even spread fake information. Besides,over involvement of government fund will also discourage private investment warm, decreasing people’s activity, as well as the whole economic vigor.

While the government funding in arts has potentical threat to the integrity of art, in real world, it is difficult for some arts to develop independently without financial support from government. Despite the fact that artists can create excellent work of art on their own provided they possess talent, enthusiasm and creativity, they have little chance to concentrate on their creation without the basic living security. History abounds with great artists who were striken by poverty,

such as Beethoven, Van Gogh, and Picasso. If they could attain certain amount of fund which guarantee their basic living, perhaps more precious works of art would be given to later generations. The government funding of the arts can be beneficial as long as it affect the creation of arts.

In conclusion, the integrity of arts can be better protected at the absence of government funding. However, the government funding is sometimes necessary to guarantee the basic living of artists so as to provide advantageous environment for the development of arts. This complex issue should be dealt with care.
