131 The arts (Painting, Music, Literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.”
In an era of rapid scientific and technological development leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, arts including painting, music, literature and etc, win great popularity among people of various hierarchies. Admittedly, arts are kinds of entertainment for people to relax themselves. However, the speaker asserts that arts also reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society. In my eyes, I agree with this assertion.
Simply put, arts reflect a society's profound ideas. The function of arts can be denoted as "expressionism"-the artists’ use as a medium to express their unique passion and insights. An illustration point is Maxim Gorky, a famous Russia writer as well as political activist. In his writings, he depicted lives of people in the lowest strata and on the margins of society, revealing their hardships, humiliations, and brutalization. He used a pen as a weapon to criticize the darkness and autocracy of the government to express his indignation and in the meanwhile he tried to convince the public that the reforms led by Karl Marx would ultimately succeed one day. Similarly, although the movie “Harry Potter” described an imaginary world filled with magic and spells, as a matter of fact, it confers the audience a value of honesty, a sense of uprightness, and the spirit of persistence. In this sense, art is not something superficial, instead it possess deep meanings about a society’s values and beliefs.
Besides, arts also reveal the impulses of the society. Indeed, arts demonstrate an ideal world, representing the dreams and pursuits of human kind yet cannot be realized at present. And they serve as a momentum to stimulate human beings to overcome their limitations and make these dreams come true. I remembered that when I was a little girl, I have read about fairytales that two princesses could look exactly the same. However, the development of science and technology gave birth to the marvelous technique of cloning, which can generate the exactly the same features of identities, thereby turns this fantasy into reality. In the same manner, robots which were depicted in imaginative works several years ago also came into being serving for the human beings for various purposes nowadays. It seems that human’s demands always precede and the technology follows behind to realize them. It may be a great probability that several years later, we could live on the Moon.
Despite that arts could reveal the impulses and hidden ideas of society, we should not ignore that some arts are created just out of aesthetic value followed by the interests of artists. The famous portrait Mona Lisa’s Smile, composed by Leonardo Da Vinci, demonstrated the virtuosity of his painting skills. When you look at the picture, you will see Mona Lisa is smiling and then this smile fades. What is with this lady's face? How did the great painter capture such a mysterious expression and why haven't other artists copied it? For nearly 500 years, people have been gazing at Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of the Mona Lisa with a sense of bafflement. Besides, no one knows whether the Monda Lisa is a representation of a real person in life or not. In this sense, can we say that the Mona Lisa’s Smile reflect something of Society? Therefore, some works of arts are associated with artists’ interests rather than the society.
To sum up, arts have various functions. Some arts manifest the ideas and impulses of the society, while some arts just created due to artists’ passion and desire, and thus, they may have nothing to do with the society. Nonetheless, arts give human something of lasting value and because of them we have a so wonderful world. |
