To see is to believe. As this old saying goes, we are now enjoying a colorful life by using advancing tools such as the video camera in recording our passing times as well as the memory. However, when we are dealing with different forms of documentation, for instance, video techniques or written work, which is more important, we may not find it easy to give an assertion. In fact, both are essential when we mentioned about the record of contemporary life.

The high technology does lend help to our record of life. The invention of video camera is just in time when we start the wanting to save our memory in a different way other than the old static methods--like written works. These moving records of the past easily call back people's memory and really contribute a lot to everyone's desire to be there, the very place and situation, just like days or months or even decades ago. By no means can we deny the achievement this kind of little machines made. People need visual record when they watch the Olympic Games, for example. By the accurate and convincing record of what exactly happened in seconds, judges and audiences can easily pick out the winner or recognize which one broke the rules. This is a very authoritative way to give comments, award the champion, and punish the speculators--those who wanted to cheat the crowds but could easily be recorded by the video. That is only one benefit we are enjoying and there is surly more.

However, to make video camera a more important status than other forms of documentation just because of the achievement by the video for only several decades is not warranted. We still have method like the written records to serve us these days, and we may still benefit from written works as an important form of documentation. For thousands of years, our ancestors are recording their lives by drawing, painting or writing. By interpreting the writings from the earlier time, the follow generation can learn from their pioneers and thus contributing to the evolution of the human race. When noticed about the past, we can only refer to the books passed by the formers. And this is the way to tell our young children what happened in the past and what can be learned. Written records are sometimes brief and sometimes narrative when dealing with historical events. For example, to describe the wars of Napoleon we may find many editions, although they may different from each other; all of them are valuable records of the past and the feeling of the author. The feeling, by the way, may be important when we really devote ourselves in searching for the true answers of history.

To evaluating these two kinds of methods in documentation by simply distinguishing which is more vital is actually a childish way of thinking. Each has its unique value and there lies different importance in each of them. Comparing them in different ways may serve the curiosity of people to put them in turns. By the record of video camera, we may benefit from its accuracy. Those paper work can not tell apart which one is the champion in the 100 meters race as convincing as the video camera. When people are suspicious about the judgments, we can just replay the video records. This specific advantage makes video camera technology leave the traditional ways of documentation behind in areas such as those that need accurate recordings for seconds. But written works really score the goals when it comes to the mental description part. Can the video tell audience what exactly the person in the screen is thinking about? Not this time unless the technology can make everyone feel the feeling of this very person as the way a writing work may use to help us understand the person when we are reading.

So the conclusion turned out to be an eclectic one: both have their unique advantages and each of them is actually important in our contemporary life. If we have to put them in turns, which are more important, we may scrutinize every aspect they are serving before we get our own idea.
