185. "Scandals--whether in politics, academia, or other areas--can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

关键词:scandalsspeaker or reformerusefulattention

分析思路:1.作者认为因“Scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could”,推导出果“scandals can be useful”
2.本题的关键是对useful的理解,我的理解是useful必须能够解决问题——清除黑恶事物。
3.我同意scandals can attract people in ways that no speaker and reformer ever could,但是我不认为scandals can be useful。因为吸引了人们的注意力只是一方面,scandal让我们的目光聚焦在丑闻本身以及当事人的过失身上,而解决问题需要找到导致scandalcause,只有找到了cause,才能真正解决问题

总论:Scandal is better than speaker or reformer in causes that it can attract our attention in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Considering scandal usually distract us from issues what are more pressing or more important, it cannot be useful to solve the problems.
分论点:
1.Scandals expose us some facts and attract our attention in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
2.Scandals often distract us from more expressing and important issues.
3.We focus on the scandal or the offense of the person involved. Only by finding what causes these scandal can we solve the problem.

正文:
People tend to consider scandals as something useful because it could attract our attention on the issues we should focus on in ways that any reformer or speaker ever could. Considering it usually distract us from issues what are more pressing or important, even though scandal are really effective in attracting the public, it’s hard to say scandals can be useful.

Scandal has its advantage in the field that it can serve to expose the issues we can’t get know in other ways. Recently, Britain has said it will take back more than 1,400 tonnes of toxic waste exported to Brazil in containers apparently wrongly marked as containing recyclable material. The waste included used nappies, syringes, used condoms, batteries or the likes. BBC reported that several companies in the UK were involved. The scandal revealed some developed countries transferred their waste that cannot be decomposed to the Third World. After this incident happened, our government had taken firm action to stamp out the illegal waste trade in order to protect people and the environment. Another example is about the embezzlement of Chen Shuibian who was the former leader of Taiwan. He and his wife were charged with embezzling at least four US dollars in public fund and he got life sentence after all. It’s funny that Chen promised to clean up decades of Nationalist corruption in 2000 but finally he was involved in corruption himself. The scandal might result in the reform of fiscal system of public fund. According to the example, speaker or reformer failed to call our attention to the problems unless these two scandals had surfaced.

However, scandals sometimes distract us from more pressing and important issues. The Hangzhou traffic accident is a representative example. A young man was totally unprepared when he was walking across the street then suddenly he was rammed by a red modified Mitsubishi race car. When the ambulance arrived, the crew determined that the young man’s heart had already stopped beating. The authorities issued orders to control and guide public opinion. But some conclusive records showed us this rich young man was speeding at 210 km per hour on the highway which had a speed limit of 120 km per hour in the earlier time. That told us the driver’s license must have been taken away according to the laws. The scandal distracted the people’s attention on the Mitsubishi modified vehicle driven by a rich young man form more important issues, such as drunk-driving and overloading vehicle, which were the immediate social problems that should be focused on and solved.

Further more, scandals let people focus on scandal itself or the person involved. But it’s not mean that people has noticed the social problems they reveal. Perhaps the paradigmatic modern example is Chinese milk scandal what was a food safety incident. The scandal raised concerns about food safety in China. Admittedly, the scandal did call our attention to certain issues of law. But people pay more attention on the bankrupt of Sanlu company or the dairy products export. Just think about what causes this problem? What’s the original matter? The issue pointed to a deep malaise in Chinese society where private profit often trumps the public good as our country races to create a market economy that has outstripped government regulators. It’s not only an individual fault but a social problem.

To sum up, I agree with the speaker the scandals have an advantage in drawing people’s attention. Nevertheless, we can’t say scandals can be useful according to they often distract us far from the key issues.

  以下修改纯属个人拙见,红字部分为改正的,绿字部分为我很欣赏的!整体看来,文章写的perfect! 尤其是例子的引用!紫色的为逻辑的问题。
People tend to consider scandals as something useful because(这个我认为在审题上有问题) it could attract our attention on the issues we should focus on in ways that any reformer or speaker ever could. Considering it usually distract us from issues what are more pressing or important, even though scandal are really effective in attracting the public, it’s hard to say scandals can be useful.
