Can video camera take the place of written records as the more accurate and convincing documentation as the speaker asserts? As far as the vivid reflection of the truth, video camera brings the revolution of tradition methods of recording, which merely rely on imagination or remembrance, yet it does not have all the virtues over written records.


It is true that video camera turns out to be an application of the magical electronic era which makes us easily and conveniently get in touch with the rest of the world, acknowledge spectacular artificial or natural phenomena, as well as better remember who we are, where we come and where to go. In other words, camera has all the basic functions of recording as what traditional written methods do. Furthermore, it has the most evidential and envious virtues compared with that of the formal methods--performing in three dimensions through images and sound. When it comes to the appreciation of arts especially an orchestral performance or visiting a gallery museum that shows paintings and statures, words can hardly prescribe the manifestation of the artists since this impulse is so strong from the soul and spirits beyond the performance of words recording, whereas the original artifacts can be recorded in three dimensions accurately even lively. Similarly, we are not only amused by what people said in entertainment programs , but also the atmosphere conveyed through every tiny actions of performers and audience, about which the written
records can hardly reflect everything. As a result, people virtually and directly contact with the ever-changing world, enjoying the visional and acoustic impulses without interpretation to certain cases by varied people. From this point of view, with the help of video camera, we have a powerful facility to know the truth, although artificial crafts can uncover the truth so similar that cheat people's sense organs via the high-tech in an evil criminal use.


However, video camera cannot turn down the place of written documents, then becomes the new domination of recording field since video camera is limited in several aspects. The most obvious negative respect is the high cost which is the reason why it cannot be popularized in any other groups of people in varied finical situations ,while low cost is the merit of paper writing. Besides, although video camera accurately record the proceeding of issues, not like the paper writing which can be synthesized, generalized, this new facility is less likely to be manipulated according to people's willingness. Thirdly, video camera merely records a process in a short period rather than years to years, since the capacity to storage is open to doubt in this era. Meanwhile finding a rule through these video records is not as convenient as looking into paper does. When we need to record ideas other than mere facts, video camera’s major virtue seems useless, whereas traditional written documentation is effective.

For some other purposes written records are advantageous to and more appropriate than video records. Beside the merits compared with video camera above, the written documents actually have an irreplaceable role in our daily lives--that is exercising our way of thinking. If we accept the facts present by the video without thinking it in our brains, the ability of imagination is murdered which needs us to translate the content in images, sound, and smell . Since most of the records we need to keep are culture and thoughts, written documentation is still the most important way for the time being, and in the future as well. To the extent that personal interpretation adds dimension and richness to the record, written documentation is actually more important than video .

In sum, we cannot say whether video camera or the written document is more important than the other in that each one has its irreplaceable merits and values. Video camera offers the accurate and convincing method of recording which can revive life in before while traditional written document can provide a more detailed and rational record in lower cost.
