ARGUMENT143
Your recent article on corporate downsizing* in the United States is misleading. The article gives the mistaken impression that many competent workers who lost jobs as a result of downsizing face serious economic hardship, often for years, before finding other suitable employment. But this impression is contradicted by a recent report on the United States economy, which found that since 1992 far more jobs have been created than have been eliminated. The report also demonstrates that many of those who lost their jobs have found new employment. Two-thirds of the newly created jobs have been in industries that tend to pay above-average wages, and the vast majority of these jobs are full-time.
*Downsizing is the process in which corporations deliberately reduce the number of their employees.

The author declaims that the article on downsizing is misleading, and demonstrate several reasons based on an economical report. However, the reasons of the author, in my opinion, contain some flaws which will be pointed out below, making the argument unconvincing to an extent degree.
The report found a great increase of job supply since 1992, without mentioning how the demands have changed since then. It is a commonsense that demand will increase with a ever-growing population, and it is reasonable to assume the new demand mainly come from the young job-haunters, who own more advantages in the industries field, thus leaving the relative-old competent workers in narrower path.
Meanwhile the report failed to show how long have the workers remained unemployed before found a new one. It prorably took years to have an opportunity for a job he will dedicate to. A part-time job due to the financial hardship should not be calculated as a suitable employment. The author’s evidence can not deny a serious economic hardship of the competent workers may last years before a new job.
In addition, the two thirds new job ‘s over-average wages will undoutably attract more application than the other one third ,which perhaps pay a below-average salary. Therefore the completion becomes more fierce. Under these circumstances, even a skillful worker who lost his job due to downsizing may have to turn to other field, thus becoming not so completing as before, which just making thing worse.
Last but not least, the author remains quiet to the downsizing, which deliberately makes someone unemployed.
Finally, after an analysis above, the impression of competent workers may facing a long time financial hardship due to downsizing still be sound, while the argument coming from the report show no convincing evidence for the conclusion. To obtain a better argument, more specific data should be included in the report, such as the demand of work.
