No, you don't want to be popular. You want to be cynical-someone who has doubts and expects the worst of people. Sound like you, or what you want to be? Read on.
editSteps
1Keep in mind the definition of the word 'cynic': someone who expects the worst in people in most or all respects. A cynic and a skeptic are different sorts of people, but similar enough to be good friends.
2Addendum to above tip: Cynics are allowed to have friends, contrary to popular belief. As a cynic, your friends should probably also be cynical or skeptical. Like minded people do make the best friends. 'Opposites attract' usually only applies in matters of romance. Fiction romance, that is.
3Learn to keep a straight face. By this, I don't mean completely detach yourself from emotion. I mean, if you're going to be cynical, you have to be able to give a commentary anytime, anywhere, without interrupting yourself with laughter or tears.
4Speaking of commentary, treat life like a movie and act as a critic. When among friends, point out and make fun of events going on around you with as much impunity as is appropriate. Of course, don't make a complete ass of yourself. Like at a movie theater, sit as far back as you can get so nobody besides whomever you're there with can hear your comments. People don't really appreciate hearing what you think the movie's dialogue should be.
5Keep your laughter in check. If you're with a good friend, you might often end up making fun of situations and working off of each other's material. These situations can be the best improv comedy you'll ever hear and it may crack you both up. Don't get so obnoxious with your laughter that you can't go on or someone else decides you've gotten annoying.
6Be witty. Wittiness and quick thinking isn't really something that can be taught, though, so if you're naturally a little slow or don't have much of an arsenal of retorts, then maybe cynicism is wrong for you. On the other hand, don't overdo it. Maybe scathing remarks and retorts come to you in seconds. In that case, think before you speak. Make sure that PWNING comeback you just came up with is appropriate for the situation. Some people are still green and naive and will actually take offense at what you say.
7Say things like 'yeah whatever' to people. Also, be suspicious of everyone. |
