Argument 143

In this letter, the author attempt to persuade the newspaper editor their article on corporate downsizing in the United States is wrong. His/her evidence to prove this is a recent report on the United States economy. However, these two articles are focus on totally different aspects on employment, the reasoning need to be stricter and this argument should be re-considered.

The author’s description about the newspaper article says that the workers who lost their jobs during economic hardship would cost years to find a suitable job. It emphasizes on the time, the suitable work and the economic hardship. While the economic report emphasizes on the job numbers, the salary levels since 1992. They are totally different.

The first is the time problem. We do not know whether 1992 to the time the author write the letter is an economic hardship. If not, then it is quite understandable that the United States has a lot of jobs and a high salary levels. And then it has noting related to the article statement about the economic hardship. The report also point out that many unemployed workers find new jobs, but we do not know how many years they used to find their new jobs. It may cost them years to find the new jobs. If it is true, it is just like that statement in the article.

Then one statement in the newspaper article is about suitable jobs. What about the jobs the workers find in the report are not suitable? We all know that when workers are fired, their family’s incomes are decreased. If their families are short of money, they have to find a job as soon as possible. Then whether the job is suitable is not taken into consideration for them.

The report also demonstrates more jobs created and the salaries are above average for the new jobs. However, we cannot forget that there are not just unemployed workers in the labor market. Every year, many graduated students also go into this market to find a job. More and more new technology companies grow up now, they offer many jobs and higher salaries. But many of the unemployed workers are lack of this kind of knowledge and they cannot get these jobs only if they have trainings about them. When they compete with the students, they often have many disadvantages, such as they have family to care about while the students don’t; they are lack of energy compared to the students; they cannot absorb the new knowledge as well as the students.

In conclusion, we can find the newspaper article is not the same as the economy report, what they want to explain are totally different. The author should collect more information on the same aspect to support his assert.
