题目:ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

The speaker asserts that the groups of people play essential roles in history as well as the individuals. I agree with this assertion. However, we should not place too much emphasis on individuals.
In the first place, the famous few made the most significant events and trends. For example, the first American president Gorge Washington is the most greatest leader in the United States. His role in gaining independence for the American colonies and unifing them under the new federal government can not be overestimated. Beacuse what he did for the country, he got the title of "Father of His Country". Aother great president is Thomas Jefferson who is the author of Declaration of Independence. He was also one of the most briliant individuals in history who made the most significant events in history.
However, besides these great individuals in history, there are groups of ordinary people who can make the events in history possible. Usually it is the great leaders who give the general outline to groups of people. Then groups of people put the great ideas into actions. Without groups of people, it seems impossble to realize the great ideas.
In the second place, is it good to place too much emphasize on individuals? I don't think it is good. If we put too much emphasis on individuals, maybe it will cause too much wide public concern which will play an unfavorable influence on individuals. The success of many scientists show this, like Newton, Edison, Curie. If they got too much emphasis and too much concern from the public, can they have the scientific success in history? Maybe the wide public concern distracted them so much that they could not concentrate on their research.
In sum, the study of history need to have a clear view about individuals and groups of people. Admittedly individuals play essential roles in history, however, we should not emphasis its role so much. Meanwhile, we should emphasis the role of groups of people. It is wise to keep the balance role between individuals and groups of people so that they can enhance the development of history.
题目:ARGUMENT97 - The following appeared in a memo from the manager of television station KICK.
"A nationwide survey reveals that a sizeable majority of men would like to see additional sports programs on television. After television station WACK increased its sports broadcasts, its share of the television audience in its viewing area almost doubled. To gain a larger audience share in our area, and thus increase company profits, KICK should also revise its broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage."

The argument is well-presented, but not thoroughly well-reasoned. By based on a nationwide survey and after WACK incresed its sports broadcasts, its audience has doubled. It seems like reasonable. However, should Kick also revise its broadcast schedule to have more sports coverage? I don't think the manager consider other alternatives in KICK.
First, the arguer fails to give the evidence the why the number of audiences who watch the sports programs has been doulbed. Maybe there are also lots of audience who are watching their favorite programs at the same time instead of only the sports programs. Also it is possible that more people have more time to watch TV at that time while there broadcasts the sports program. Or maybe there is a big sports event on TV so they watch WACK.
Second, the arguer asserts that KICK should add more sports programs. However, he didn't take into account other audiences who are not interested in sports programs. According to different ages, the need of audiences is different. For example, old people enjoy operas more while kids enjoy cartoons more. Young people like fashion and entertainment programs. So if KICK only add more sports program, maybe it will have more audience who love sports, but meanwhile, it will lose lots of other kinds of audiences to lead to the decline of the station's profits.
Third, even though Kick include more sports programs, is it necessary to revise broadcast schedule? It seems that the manager fails to consider the whole management of the station. There are lots of different programs in the station, maybe these programs can bring more profits to the station.
In sum, the arguer need to consider more alternatives between these two stations. |
