ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

The speaker asserts that for a researcher pursuing his individual interests is more important than considering about whether his interest is relevant to the society or not. This claim seems specious. However, I disagree with what the speaker concludes because I think there should be a balance between the former and the latter especially for a scholar.

I admit the importance of the interest for most people become more energetic to put their heads in the work which they are interested in than they are disinclined to work. The difference of the sensation when we are faced with different works is very ordinary because it proceeds from the nature of human beings. And for a scholar his interest boosts his passion and spirit in studying. That’s why Einstein was turned into a Nobel Prize winning scientist from an officer.

But we still cannot make a conclusion that the researchers’ pursuits of their individual interests are more important than their concern of whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society due to the importance of the interest. Admittedly scientists can gain more fruits in their interested research fields, whether their fruits are useful to the society or not decides whether our human beings can benefit from the success or not. Just imagine a picture of what are always screened by Hollywood. If a scientist’s interest was not suit for the benefit of the society, it may lead to the extermination of the world. The excuse that it is not the scientist’s fault but the careerist’s or that the villain cheated the scholar are outdated. The researchers have the obligation to care about the morality and the contribution to the society. They should be careful because they have professional knowledge which the general don’t have. Whether the world would be destroyed or be benefited is just a twist of ideas at his disposal.

To sum up, without interest in their work the researchers cannot be successful let alone improve people’s life quality and welfare. Without their concern whether they make a contribution to the society they may also bring calamity to the human beings. It is more important to keep balance of both sides than each single one.

The speaker asserts that for a researcher pursuing his individual interests is more important than considering about whether his interest is relevant to the society or not. This claim seems specious(先肯定吧还是,否则后面接个however语气不对). However, I disagree with what the speaker concludes because I think there should be a balance between the former and the latter especially for a scholar.

I admit the importance of the interest for most people become more energetic to put their heads in the work which they are interested in than they are disinclined to work. (这句话很长,但主谓宾不清,需要改一下)The difference of the sensation when we are faced with different works is very ordinary because it proceeds from the nature of human beings. And for a scholar his interest boosts his passion and spirit in studying. That’s why Einstein was(was不需要) turned into a Nobel Prize winning scientist from an officer.

But we still cannot make a conclusion that the researchers’ pursuits of(for) their individual interests are more important than their concern of whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society due to the importance of the interest(这句不要了,一句话里出现了2次importance of interests). Admittedly scientists can gain more fruits in their interested research fields, (however)whether their fruits are useful to the society or not decides whether our human beings can benefit from the success or not. Just imagine a picture of what are always screened by Hollywood. If a scientist’s interest was not suit for the benefit of the society, it may lead to the extermination of the world.(最好举出一个例子,比如蜘蛛侠里的) The excuse that it is not the scientist’s fault but the careerist’s or that the villain cheated the scholar are outdated. The researchers have the obligation to care about the morality and the contribution to the society. They should be careful because they have professional knowledge which the general don’t have. Whether the world would be destroyed or be benefited is just a twist of ideas at his disposal.
(两段论证,不论是字数、还是说理力度都不够充分)
To sum up, without interests in their work the researchers cannot be successful let alone improve people’s life quality and welfare. Without their concern whether they make a contribution to the society they may also bring calamity to the human beings(这句话不通,make a contribution已经肯定是对社会有益的,改成whatever scientific achievements have been made). It is more important to keep balance of (between)both sides than (just emphasizing) each single one.
