Living in an area crazy for accuracy, naturally, we always regard data as the first step for the foundation of a theory. Admittedly, data helps our critical mind evaluate and screen those innumerous kinds of possibilities and explanations. To foster a better atmosphere for the development of theories, however, we need to cool down our data enthusiasm, taking different appropriate attitude toward data case by case.

Firstly, when it comes to the nature science, sufficient data is always of great importance and necessity. After all, science is something that calls for objectivity, thus only when the theory is studied through scientific methods, getting convincing data, can we accept the credibility of the theory. No need to search for those big stories, just think about students who work in the lab, trying time and time, only to get the perfect data to convince others of their studies. Can’t believe what our science would be like if scientists theorize without data-anyone could play as a scientist by just claiming somewhat amazing findings, with no data to provide. If this is the case, our science would never be the power for our development, but just a ridiculous BBS with the glorying name-science.

However, sometimes under the limits of certain time, such as poor study methods or research facilities, theory founders just cannot provide data for their theories. Just imagine what if the world demand Nicolas Copernicus to provide the accurate speed and angle of the earth’s circling around the sun-impossible for his time when those advanced observation devices
we have today were not available at all. If the history abandoned his theory just because of the data shortage, earth would be the center forever. Similarly, if we unreasonably force the scientists to provide data which has actually gone beyond the current researching ability, science would never advance because of our stubborn to data.

Wise we would be if we hold a more practical attitude towards those theories without data on its first show, due to the limits of the time. Taking a whole view of the history, it’s not rare to find those great theories, born with no data, while proved wonderfully by the followers. Maxwell proposed the theory of electromagnetism, which at the first beginning is just an amazing even crazy prediction at that time, while finally proved and appreciated by the whole world. Luckily, not too stubborn on data, we did not miss that plausible theory.
Data loses its glory, when it comes to the field of art, Art as the expression of our mind is something subjective, the key of which is all about feeling but not evidence. In fact, calling for data in art is just like forcing Leonardo da Vinci to say goodbye to art, driving 迈Michael Jackson to forget about what is singing. Similarly, an artist might have a great series of theory for his or her works, but once asked for data support, he or she would undoubtedly view your serious data request as funny and ridiculous. In a word, it’s both unnecessary and unavailable for artists to provide data for their theories.

Coming to the end, we need to rethink about the function of data-the evidence, the affirming reflection, however important, it’s not the essence of a theory. Data support is welcomed, if any. Nevertheless, when the data is unavailable because of uncontrollable limits, or unnecessary (just like in arts), relax your data nerves. Only in this way enjoy a persistent development whether in science or in arts.
