The author contends that skepticism should be brought to whatever students study and students should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. I agree with the contention to the extent that students should not accept what they are taught passively, they should have the skepticism spirit. However, should students bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study? I have different ideas about this.
On the one hand, skepticism is essential for students to have some creative ideas and enhance their abilities. In modern society, creation is a very important ability for students which will produce far-reaching impacts on their future job. Nowadays, if one wants to catch up with the paces of society, one should have the courage to challenge himself and he should have the idea of skepticism. Bill Gate, the founder of Microsoft, gave up his study in Harvard while others could not understand why he chose this. William Harvey, who discovered the circulation of the blood and the role of the heart in propelling it, refuted the theories of Galen and laid that foundation for modern physiology.
Meanwhile, it is beneficial for students to question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. If students accept what they are taught passively, the classroom will be the only platform for teachers, which will play unfavorable effects on students. This is the reason why students are encouraged to ask questions in class. The more questions they propose, the deeper they understand what they are taught.
On the other hand, there are some subjects in which knowledge is stable and reliable, students should not bring skepticism to these subjects and knowledge. For instance, we all know one plus one is two, should students question it and prove another answer by themselves? The answer is definitely "NO". Students can accept some basic and reliable theories which was passed from our ancestors instead of questioning whatever they are taught.
Furthermore, students should learn how to balance skepticism and accepting. The teachers also have the responsibility to instruct their students to deal with the balance. Students can question more if they accept some basic knowledge.
From what has been discussed above, we can safely arrive in the conclusion that skepticism is vital for students, we should provide a free atmosphere for students to question and challenge what they learnt on the basis of knowledge which they accepted passively.
